Hi All,

The fish are in full swing of the spawn and although several species spawn at different times. Carp and bass now, Barbel next month etc. I wanted to try and disprove some theories that when fish spawn they cannot be caught. Now what happens is within the group of species certain individuals will spawn early on the season and others will spawn a little later. This way pressure on the breeding space is spread over a few weeks. This also allows for predation to take it’s roll in the swing of things.

My destination of choice was a dam called Roodekoppies (this is by far my favourite dam near Gauteng) and is situated just the other side of Brits in the NW province. Roodekoppies plays host to some 12 species of fish and is a real artlure persons dream destination. My choice target for the day was carp – this is a difficult species to catch but when you learn the knack they are one of the easier fish to catch on artlure. Needless to say on arrival at Roodekoppies any piece of vegetation within the water was erupting with carp as they are heavy into the spawn.

The conventional approach to catching carp for me is to use a 13ft rod and then once you find a carp feeding (usally the fish is enclosed in a cloud of dust and the tail is high in the air and the head is down in the muck) one simply takes the leadhead and gently lowers it on eitherside of the head. Carp will generally snap the leadhead aggressively and then the fight is on. This sounds way easier than what it actually is.... In today’s case the water was so clear that it was nigh impossible to get up close enough to dip for them. Saying this the very first carp I took today was caught dipping. Change of condtions = change of tactics. What I did to overcome the clear water situation was to tie a leadhead onto my spinning tackle – thereby I could make long casts to sighted fish. This is the first time I used this metod and it proved to be highly successful.I found that if one cast directly above the fish they would spook and it would be game over. I found by casting over them then hastily retrieving the leadhead just below the surface then allowing it to drop to the ground 50 cm before the fish and then applying short jerks to the leadhead whilist it bounced along the bottom induced savage strikes.

This morning I caught 18 carp all between 4 and 6kgs what is really nice with site casting is that one can almost always choose the size fish you want to catch. I also applied this method very successfully to barbel except in the case of barbel I used an mid sized crankbait. I caught 5 barbel between 5kgs and 9kgs and I dropped a double decker next to the boat which I put at about 15kgs.

Bass fisherman talk about Finesse fishing – fishing for carp on artlure takes finesse fishing just that one step up but on the same token it can be either very frustrating or very successful. I guess as in the case of Gary Player “the more I practise the luckier I get”

Anyways had a great Sunday Morning.......
