Finishing work at 12 today then off to Melkbos. Weather is hot and the water should be fine.
Hopefully the crays are about.......would be nice to have a crayfish and steak braai tonight.........in this glorious weather we are having.
Still  going down tomorrow morning around 8am.

Hey Pelagic, I will be down there with my brother, but no reason why we can't hook up. I could use the advice from someone with exp like you. This is my first time catching crays so it would be a great help.

My bro is bringing some hake heads...got some lumo yellow cable and 2 ltr bottles so we can send down a bait bag....I've been told it makes life easier. What do you think?

We will go in in front of the NSRI building...look out for us.

See you there man. Hope it's gonna be good.

I must say I have only tried to use bait once or twice. Not sure about Melkbos as I have only dived there a couple of times but on the Betties / Hangklip side there are so many shy / pyjama sharks that it becomes a bit of a mission. They do not only harass the bait bag but also take the crays  (usually the biggest ones)  so I tend to spend more time trying to fight off the bladdy sharks than actually getting crayfish.

For now I’m sticking to wresting them out of their holes...

Pyjama and skaamhai (shy sharks) are ok dude :) You WILL see em, sometime you have to get em out the holes the kreef are in, they like to sleep under ledges etc. but they small...and kinda harmless...lil sandpaper teeth...pick em up..they curl into a ball (hence shy shark). Dont have to worry bout em..or cow sharks ;)

A dive buddy did grab a 1 meter pyjama at buffels once...in a flash it turned around and latched onto his arm...had to pull the lil bugger off..there's a nice round hole in his wetsuit now..and he had a bruise for a couple of weeks hehe

Hi Guys,

I do some kayaking from Melkos by the slip, very new at it.  Will I find crayfish in the kelp infront of the NSRI, we normally fish in the "sloep" by the slip.   I will use a ring.  I understood that they were very deep in at Melkbos?

Anyone had any success this year at Melkbos with Crays?

I really enjoyed everyone's comments thus far, and learned a lot.

Thank You

Hey Franskraal,

Green giant pulled a few the other day...big ones.

I've been told you can get them about 5m deep in the kelp iin front of the nsri building. Thats where i am going with bait bags.

Good luck man.

Anywhere you see kelp at melkbos and the reef behind the kelp :) depth doesn't matter...picked em up in 30cm's of water before..so just look in the holes :)

I got kreef in water between half a meter and 6 metres on my last dive...

You don’t have to stress about them at all, there are some klipvis out there with worse attitudes. As green giant said they are pretty much harmless...

Saw some people operating more or less in front of the slip – if it was any of you guys hope you had some luck and got some nice sized crays...

Thanks pelagic.

As someone else mentioned, it’s just really sad to see all the empty pearly shells scattered on the ocean floor.  Seems as if the poachers are having a field day out there...
