I'm going to the Orange River over new years. I'm going down the river in a canoe so there is limited space for bait, rods and equipment. I need help!!!! I have got: 7' shimano rod, daiwa regal 2000, I want to buy a rod and reel so any suggestions. (Remember that I have limited space) (8' or 9') Best bait, lures, ????? How to protect my rods? What to look for (structure, deep holes, ????) What type of rod? Reel? Please guys, Any help would be appreciated!

http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=25003&forum_id=64 Allrounder Check out this link it is of a jigging rod ,Shimano Trevalla 40-60lbs rating,It has distinct close range advantages, due to the bending characteristics,Getting the Mona- Lisa close enough to the canoe to unhook or net is one of your key problems when fishing off a ski or canoe. Rod; Shimano Trevalla 40-60lbs 6 feet or 6'6 or similar type Reel; Anything with a solid drag, the above rod is rung for spinning but from the link you will see it is capable of working hard with a multiplier. Line 200-250 .50mm-.55mm high abrasion. Rod protection,"Pool-noodle" slotted vertically will not only protect your guides, but if tied with an elasticated velcro strip it will also float your rod if you perhaps flip over.It has other obvious emergency uses too. Lures ;Salmo sliders 7cm upwards-sinking,and some others Salmo's which I am sure Ryan will be able to help you with. Your other rod I would use for spinning for yellows,or a 6-7 weight fly rod. I know it may sound obvious ,but beware of the additional glare from the water which will be very close to you,so take loads of sunblock and fluids, combined with a ventilated wide-brimmed-hat.If the African sun gets hold of you without enough fluid,it could ruin your week/end in a day. Jeez I am so jealous. ![]()

Hi there Allrounder. This is what my setup looked like when I went on the river in March. We started at Noordoewer and took us 5 days to get to Sendelingsdrift. Caught nice Yellow's and Barbels. I used a 7ft rod with a 3000 exceller, spinners for the Yellow's. To catch your first barbel you can use anything meaty like chicken or steak or catch a small barbel, chop it up and use it for bait. Promise you'll catch big one's. Take enough sunscreen, you'll need it.![]() Attachment: 033.JPG (Downloaded 346 times)

allrounder When are you gonna be on the river? Where you leaving from? Going on your own or with an organised group? I'm doing a trip from the 27th to the 31st, and in camp for New Years... Gonna take my lightest jigging gear and chase the odd snor bek in the evenings with some left overs, or a head of whatever I catch during the day on light gear....

Nice fish bud, if I had to hazard a guess i would say about 15kg, its difficult when you cant see how wide the head is.

Caught the previous one on a 9ft kingfisher Gully hunter rod, kingfisher giant abrasion 15lb line. I used yellow fish heads for bait. This is a 8kg one. Attachment: P1010126.JPG (Downloaded 179 times)
