thought i'd give it a try. im not a very creative person when it comes to DIY...got a 110mm pipe from a building site...closed the bottom with a 30mm pine circle and screwed(will replace with some rivets) on some straps. will try it maybe this weekend . if it works ok, then i'll put on some finishing touches lol...PS...i also removed the eyes of my blue marlin and started removing the varnish, takes time, what can i use to strip it of without damaging the blank?

Great attempt there bru.

About using a solvent to remove the varnish off your rod i'll play safe and simply sand with some sandpaper. p600 shoud do the trick. Paintstrippers and strong solvents may just damage the rod blank.

Just finished refurbishing my my exage. Nice to personalise your tackle.

p600?? gonna take me ages hahaha...tried 220 but it takes soooo long...what i want to do:

give the rod a grey.ish metalic colour
Fuji guides
super glue or epoxy the guids
in place of the string or whatchamacallit, i want to try and use red heat shrink
try out cricket bat grips for my grips

weird, but i think it will work, will just replace the grips if its too slippery

I would rather get a piece of aluminium and rivet that on as a clamp for your straps. I built a similar carrier and the rivet pulled through the material ...in the airport:swear

I've seen some guys use the "loop" part of velcro for the grip for the rods, it is nice and soft on the hands, cheap and you get it in all snazzy colors

Hiya roland30,

Best way to strip varnish is with a Stanley balde. Run the blade at and angle to the blank and then scrape it up and down.

Be very careful as you can bite into the blank and damage the graphite.

Take a look in the DIY thread on a post by Enigma, here you will see the results of stripping the varnish away.

If you are looking for someone local to rebuild the rod then save your pennies and use Errol Holmes in PE. Excellent work!

If you want to have a crack at doing it yourself then do a google search on rod building...there are thousands of links.

It's a tricky business, I use to make up my own fibreglass rods when I was younger, but today I leave it to the pros!

Good luck!
