Here's a DIY for a Bait sling that is used to chum your swim for Carp fishing. I have however used it to great effect in the sea for chumming sard chunks, fish heads and even blood mixed with flour to form feed balls or Minced sards with binder to chum sards.
The basis is a 2l Coke bottle as it meets all the requirement and is very durable and above all doesn't cost you anything.
For competition Carp fishing it must not exceed 40mm but for social fishing and saltwater chumming I would go with 50 -65mm diameter.
Mark the Coke bottle with a ring on the diameter decided upon and mark 2 x 2cm wide arms
Cut the basic shape with a sharp scissors.
Split the neck of the bottle to insert the fin. Without this fin the sling does not tip and release the feed / chum
Insert the fin (width of the sling). Using a heated srewdriver melt 4 holes through the neck and fin and secure with a cable tie.
Using a needle or melting a series of holes in the arms, thread 1mm nylon or 80lbs braid / dacron through. The sling lines must exit the inside of the sling at the top.
Connect the swivel on a loop with it like this you can adjust it to allow it to hang straight.
Here is a video of the process off feeding with the sling. One can easily feed up to 100m and a maximum of 130 - 140m (Don't make the mistake of feeding farther than you can cast your loaded rig) http://video.filestube.com/video,86a127df65b5b97803e9.html
Tips:
Rod for the sling if you are going to feed big feedballs or fish hears should be rated to at least 250gr
Feeding 20mm boilies from a 65mm sling will give you a spread of about 2m at 80m
Use a casting leader of at least 0.60mm.
When casting, as soon as the bait is released from the sling close the bail arm and pull back, the sling will land at your feet.
