Sounds like a bearing problem , on the spool bearings, u should take them out ,soak and wash them in benzine and allow to dry , soak them in a small tub of oil, or heat up the oil in small metal container and pop the bearings in ,they will soak up the hot oil, there is awide variety of reel oils available but most of the guys i know make up there own "special " blends,if the bearings still squeal and feel rough then its time to replace them , pm Kumz he can supply you a set of bearings.

Are you submerging your reel in sea water? ....no???...

well then stop rinsing your reel with water....theres no need to!!
spray it off with Spanjaard, wipe it down take off the drag and disengage the spool, wrap in rag and put in fishing bag....

Yip all grappies op n stokkie...

1. Are you one of the "dunk reel in seawater before i cast" okes.
2. If you are, side bets there is a piece of grit somewhere inside there wearing out something as we speak.
3. Are you one of the drive around with my reels on my rod outside of the car/bakkie on roofracks/rodholders from my house all the way to the sea?
4. If you are, a 120km/h wind racing through your reel's oily bits dries out the lubrication faster than the kalahari sun on a brilcream koppie...
5. Have you been fishing in a howling NW/SE here in the good old cape???
6. If you have, and especially on the west coast, this fine sand gets in EVERYWHERE, not just into you jockstrap, but also inside the spool etc...
7. Dunking it in fresh water after this guarantee's your just washing something nasty deeper into your reel's private parts.

8. To form a picture.... take a handful of sand throw it in ur underpants, and run 100 metres. Then multiply that by about 100 and you have the revolutions your spool is doing...

Reels are supposed to be silent. If it makes any noise and you cannot service it yourself take it to one of the many people that do reel services in Cape Town. I often carry myself half to death with sinkers and what not but i have one spare reel even if i take 1 rod. If one makes a noise it gets packed away and take the other reel, even if it doesnt match your application.

Thanx guys. I do tend to get my reel wet with salt water but i don dunk it on purpose. After that it lives in its cover in my fishin bag. And i do fish in the wind. Its prob got sand in the bearings. How do i sort that out. Or do i need new bearings.

take it in for a service.. there are quite a few trustworthy people here in the cape.

I would definately check it out rather than casting with it even if i have no reel for 2 weeks.
