Turtle - Mozambique

When I was in Mozam, I went for a walk on the beach with the Mrs, know one around and we came across this little lady laying her eggs at the base of the dune, awesome to watch (from a distance of course) as It's one thing I would never imagine being privy too.. we made sure she went back safely, and that none of the "Turtle and Egg Snatchers" saw this happen, as they would have grabbed her and/or the eggs...for food or cash..its sad to think they kill them in Mozambique and other parts of the world...

Any way thought I would share the pics for those who have not seen this, def something to check..

Why someone would kill them, i don't know, such beautiful animals, must be an experience seeing them on the beach laying her eggs.
Thanx for shearing.

Hi A.R.,
Thanks for the pics... it's a great feeling watching them dig the nest, lay the eggs and swim away, isn't? Where was this and when, may Iask? I'm guessing a few km north of Malongane?

What really gets me angry are those 4x4 tracks high up on the beach...

Ya it was awesome checking her make her way back to the sea, took for ever though,,,she was huge, must be heavy on those legs...amazing how they cover up with sand after ...really cool...

This was in December 07 and was near Inhambane, South of Zavora Lodge, we actually stayed at Dolphin Lodge, awesome cabins on stilts,, and there is like 3kms of untouched beach south of Dolphin Lodge which is where the Turtle was...

That must have been awesome. Thanks for sharing. By the way, how was the fishing? LoL

Fishing was bad.. ha ha.. if you remember 2007 was when there were some hectic floods in Mozam...and there were cyclones during that month...

Weather was very weird, would get 4 seasons in one day, and would change in no time,....

Speaking to some of the guys at Zavora lodge, most of them (off boats) were coming back empty handed... some couta but not the usual fishing (as told by some regulars) as past years...

Maybe some of the guys on this site who frequent Zavora can give us and update, those who fished off shore?

A great site and a great privilege to see! People pay big bucks to see these wonderful creatures doing their thing... Was privileged enough to go on a few tagging expeditions up North Coast Natal back in the days... Loggerheads and Huge Leatherbacks... some Leatherbacks up to 600kg!!

Thanks for the info A.R.,
I'm part of a group working on marine turtle monitoring and conservation in Moz and this is really a good piece of info... will call Dolphin Lodge so they can join our program... thanks again...

The only things that really beats that feeling is actually seeing the hatchlings crawling to the sea.... that's something else!!!! Here's a pic of loggerhead we've saved at Malongane last season (Jan '09) fom a ghost crab... she made it to the water... not sure she would survive... I know we should let nature go its course but I really could'n resist... just wanted to smack the damn crab!!!!

Thats cool, hats off to you.. the Owners name Is John Mulder, really nice guys im sure he will be keen...

I can imagine checking the little guys take their first dip must be awesome..just sad seeing them get nailed by birds ....reckon It's hard to sit and watch if they get so close and dont make it... I would probably run around waving a stick chasing the birds away, like a mad man.. ha ha...
