Best biltong ever. Oily but lekker. My buddy Johnny Deysel's ouma was a Blou Rokkie and she taught us what "Barber" was all about. She made us steaks, she crumbed it but best of all was the biltong. It used to hang off the rafters in the garage and you could just help yourself. Man, I miss those days and yes we did catch a lot of Barbel.

i tried to make it when i was a kid but failed,, it smelt like a rotten animal body in the boiling sun, i dont think ill try it again, i have however eaten barbel that was purged and prepared really well, it was good to eat

I believe smoked Barbel tail is also great, I still want to try it

Sorry, I only realise now you're talking about freshwater barbel, and not the nuisance of the ocean

Barbel in fresh CLEAN running water is rated as one of the best eating fish. Mate of mine had a book that rated fish on a scale of 1(bad) - 5(best) Barbel rated a 5. Cant remember name of book it was a long long time ago.

Have had fresh water barbel smoked before but never tried biltong - could be quite nice - especially if spicy.
