Shimano TLD 2040 upgrade

Any of the boffins help me out here pls? I have an Exage 1446 with a Shimano TLD 2040 reel. Reel is really worn out and I would like to have a reel that will be a better balanced outfit too.

I mainly fish edibles from both rock and surf and merely change my tip to the situation required. Normally a 12 to 15 kg line with a 21 to 27 kg leader. 5 ounce sinker as a norm. Sometimes lighter in rocks and heavier in surf.

I suppose I get reasonable casting distance, depending on the size of bait, about 100 to 130 meters, but would appreciate another 20 meters (as we all would I guess).

Any suggestions please?

Why the Torium 20? Compared for instance to the Grandwave 50 or Saltist 40.. that's to say if money wasn't such a big issue?

For the price the Torium is much stronger. That was my first upgrade from my 20/40 way back and I love the reel. It has a narrower spool than the Grandwave and the Saltist. Great for spinning too. I have a Saltist and the only better reel in this size in my opinion would be the Toriums older brother the Trinidad. I have a friend who has caught a Yellowfin Tuna on a Torium 20. See below. Need I say more.

Ok... or rather wow!

Why then a Torium 20 and not a 30 or 40? Weight, balance, casting distance, line capacity? Although I have NEVER had an edible take off a hello of a lot of line. Possibly because I've never caught that giant huh? LOL

1309sg, please don't let us start this difference of opinion again, this can get into a rather lengthy discussion, some of us like the Daiwas and some of us like the shimanos, I was in your position not to longer ago, so i got the SL50, i was happy with that combination it was value for money, then i got the saltist 50, i have no complaints, comparing reels are like comparing cars, the one has a footrest but no cup holders so we all have our own opinions. I would advise you to buy a 50 in a daiwa or shimano, it would go very well with your rod. this is just my opinion, each to our own.

Thanks Marra. Just a final question perhaps.... what is the difference in casting ability with the 20 versus the 40 or 50? Is it the same with just a larger line capacity?

The torium 20 is basically the competitor tot he diawa 40 size reels. the shimano trni/ torium 30 is the diawa 50 competitir. i own a torium and 4 sl50's. love them all, for value, the sl50 is awsome. sure, maybe the torium stronger, but then I dont have the saltist 50 (yet but am working on that). Got to a store, play with them all and go with the one that feels right in your grubby paws. You wont go wrong with any of them that I can say. your call as to how much $$$$ you want to spend.

The Torium is alot stronger internally than the Saltist. Ask the guys who service reels and they will give you advice. I like my Saltist 50 and think it casts fantastically. However it isn't as smooth as the Tor or Trini and internal parts have failed on me in the past. Has a great retrival rate too. For Edibles you don't really need to go for a Tor 30. The Tor 20 is more versitile and you can even spin with it on an 11ft rod or target big eds with it on your 14ft rod. This is relating to the size/weight. Also try get the Carbontex drag washers should you go this route.

This is not a Daiwa vs Shimano. I have both reels which I like for various reasons and am just stating my opinion relating to the questions. One can only really judge once you have fished alot with the equivalent in both the Shimano and Daiiwa.

The Grandwave is also an awesome reel, just not as strong.

Thanx Redeye. I think you've covered the angles. In summary then:

Tor 20 is more verstaile than 30, can spin and will take most edibles.

Should I want to go for sharks at some time, the 30 would be a better bet.

Would you still go with the same 12 to 15 kgs line (Tor 20) or go down to 20lbs for the sake of capacity?

A lot of silly questions, but I'd rather learn from experienced anglers than from my own (in)experience.

Got Torium 30 at the most unbelievable of prices....... suppose it's against the rules to say where, but how does R1250 grab you? All the websites I looked at and places I phoned was a helluva lot more expensive! And the service waqs great too!

Man, what a nice piece of machinery. Loaded it with 300m 30lb braid, topped up with 30 lb of the good regular hi-abrasive stuff (about 250-300m I guess) and now ITCHING for the first chuck....LOL...massive overwind probably!! ROFLMAO

Well done, you wont be disappointed. Recommend getting the drag washers upgraded to the carbontex. Enjoy your reel boet!
