Hi Guys.....

I am thinking about going down to umkomaas this coming weekend, was wondering what it is like there? What sort of fish can be caught there etc.

I am taking Sardines and Chokka with me, any other baits you could recommend?

Are there any really good places that are there?

I am kinda new to the forum, and surf fishing for that matter, pls any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hi AJP,

Forget any certain spots, Just target the sardine shoals for the wkend, use spoons/poppers or jig & drop traces. Make the best of it while the sards are here.

contact the Sardine hotline to find out where its happening. Ph:0822849495

Raveen,

So do you think it would be a good idea to go slide some baits out at Toti, or winkles? dont do much fishing saltwater, need advice

would be a good idea, especially with alot of game-fish & sharks around. If sard shoal within casting distance, use the jig & drop method( use a treble hook to jig the sard & allow it to settle to the bottom of the sea-bed, awaiting a pick-up) .

hi,

Steel or nylon coated steel (hook line +-30cm), sinker line be longer +-70cm.

to Land Locked, yes ilegal in comp only.  but hey we jigging bait fish only for the sard run, just as good as putting out a live bait.

Howzit AJP,

About fishing Umkomaas, if you are going down with Sards and Chokka, I would suggest the North bank of the river, about 200m North of the mouth.

The guys have been getting queenfish and kings on a fairly regular basis and now with the sards around anything can happen. Remember to float your bait by first tieing on a strip of polystyrene onto your hook before wrapping your tenderised chokka over it.

The sards do come in quite close in that stretch, the parking is gr8 if you get there early, and the bay is big enough to accommodate just about any crowd.

Another option in Umkomaas is when you go over da river (on the bridge by car) and as you get to where the road is now closed, park on the portion of road that wasn't washed away, and fish on the ledges to the right about 100m walk. I have caught bronze bream, blacktail, kingfish, salmon, stumpy, shad, stonebream and lots of BIG sandies along that stretch.

Hi Rakesh,

Got another question for you, is it advisable to use nylon coated carbon trace at umkomaas or just a thicker mono line as my trace?

So AJ did u get to UK.................what score?? I heard from a reliable source that the garrick went beserk at Sezela on Saturday am between 10 am and 1 pm. And to think that I was stuffing around with the sards at Pennington!!

Hi Rakesh,

Yeah, went to Umkomaas,

I had no luck, except i got hooked on half a tree that gave me a great fight.... heehee.

One of my friends pulled out a small stumpie, which was released.

We left at 11am from there, we started fishing around 5am on the north bank of the river. I didn't see anyone catching any fish that day while i was there, i must say that spot is really nice there, i am definitely gonna go back there.

Did you have any luck?

Sorry about the empty fish box AJ, but I agree the spot does have a lot of potential. I did not do any fishing this weekend (can you believe it) but then I was involved in another 4 letter "F" word sport........Golf. My nephew did have a couple of throws at Uk though and was just as disappointed.....aaaah well, I suppose that's why they call it fishing!! Better luck next time......just keep at it.

I did get some very handy fresh sards straight out the nets on Saturday and I am going to be putting these out this coming weekend. I will be fishing at the Umhlanga Lighthouse on Saturday avi and UK/Sezela in the am. Unfortunately Sunday is written off to Golf again..........it's really a c&^%p life!!

Cheers

Toti didnt fish well this weekend, friends of mine went there i would say a better option might be winkles took a drive there yesterday on my way home from Mtwalume, there were alot of fisherman still there, but you have a whole week to decide, just wait for more news to come thro.
