Jigging combo

Hi all

just wanted to see if anyone could help me out with regards to a good rod and reel combo for jigging and dropshot here in the Cape. Main target species would be yellowtail and snoek. Been using my stella and shimano speedmaster heavy rod but find it a bit of a overkill and like to mainly use it when targeting longies. Seen some good reviews with regards to the shimano stradic.

Dea121 - Mate the Stradic is an AWESOME reel... HT's has accounted for HUGE numbers of Snoek, Yellowtail and Geelbek this season.... awesome drag system, great cpapcity, smooth as a new Brazilian.... in all a damn fine reel!

What size is your Stella?

If you are looking at inshore outfit, and you've already got the heavier Stella/Speedmaster Combo, have a look at the Stradic in the 5000 size, and maybe match it to the lightest Shimano Trevalla Jigging stick.
This rod is 7ft long, which is pretty long for ajigging rod, but works beautifully with lighter 80 to 18o gram jigs, which inshore is perfect.
The bonus is that being 7ft, and a little softer of action, you can cast spinners and poppers with it beautifully.
It will also fish heavier size soft plastics ( drop shot ) too, especially being slightly longer... look its not gonna be a perfect dropshot outfit, especially for the lighter jigheads, but for the snoek and tail you gonna be fishing 1/2 oz plus most of teh time anyway, probably 1oz more than most times, and this outfit will fish these perfectly.... good casting distance, good backbone for our inshore species, great sensitive action, which will allow you to wrk the lures well, as well as give you great sport on all the inshore species....

I would look at spooling up with 20 to 30 lb braid on it...

thanks 4 the reply will def look into the stradic 5000 now with the Trevella medium light jigging stick. I have the stella 20000 great reel that is great fun when catching longies have not had the luck of enticing Mr Yellow yet:fswim. Only recentely started to jig and use dropshot for snoek, have not had as much success yet compared to the conventional handline method but it is a work in progress. What jigs have u found to be the most succesful, u have used for snoek?  Have constantly reverted back to the garfish spinner as opposed to the jig as it seems to bring more success.

Boet if you have the 20000 Stella, maybe a 6000/8000 size Stradic woould better suit your needs..... the 5000 will more than handle, but you could double the 8000 up as a Longie reel, cause its well more than capable!

Jigs for snoek.... if its in the water it'll get eaten when the snoekies are thick.....
I've had the best action with snoek on jigs using Blue?Silver and Blue/Pink with a fair bit of sliver/flash in them... unfortunately I've doneted alot of my favourite jigs to SNoek, a couple Fisherman Long A's and such.... its always that "One last drop" and you get hit on the drop and that bloody snoek clips you off on the drop!!!

I find the Garfish and Snake spinners too light to jig with... they don't sink fast enough for my liking... I wanna get down there and get into the fish QUICK!!!

But using expensive jigs for snoek is silly... you can catch them on the cheap ones, and I use my cheaper jigs, and cheaper hooks too... I don't go wasting Gamakatsu Tuned hooks on them, cause you are bound to lose a couple!!!

Something with some blue and pink in it, with a fair amount of flash and you are good to go!

nepps, i just bought a beast master heavy jigging rod rated at 420g. could you please tell me what you think of it and is it gud? seems strong as hell.

t-time - Bro I've not had much a a play with that rod bud, so I can't really comment on it first hand bro, but by all reprts its a great rod, with awesome power and has dealt the dirt to plenty of fish!!!

I need to have a better look at them a some point,but I know that most guys who own them love them!

Bought myself a ML Trevalla 2 days ago at Western Accessories.......awesome rod, matched it to my Sedona 4000

cheap and effective, think the owner hook on this surecatch jig is worth more than the jig! work it walk-the-dog style (one rotation of the handle with one pump of the rod), works like a charm on snoek, lotsa fun!

What about old knives and forks to use as jigs? I read someone do this and had good success. He just basically drilled two holes in them and attached some hooks and off he went!

T-time... on my recent trip to Kilwa, one of the blokes was using that exact stick and whacked a GT of 40kg with it, while jigging... I was very impressed with it...

And the result...! Oh yeah! It's a good stick...

wow, looks like it is good. i bought it in a rush without even investigating so i didnt know much about it.
