Catching mullet

Can anyone help. What is the easiest way to catch mullet with a light rod in the river for live bait? What rig to use?

Hi any 6ft to 7ft bass rod is fine as long as the tip is nice and soft..u can use 3lbs to 4lbs mono with a small ball sinker 3/4oz with a small size 10hook if you can get size 16 hooks even better..u can use a small foam cone float with white dough or chokka on hook.

White mussels are firm and last long sometimes the mullet feed at the bottom in this case you can make up a 50cm trace with two hooks on hooks apart from each other 15cm with ball sinker on the bottom.

You have two options the float or

The sinker trace.

Good luck.

Hey
6-8ft rod. My 8ft fiberglass rod works just fine.
I would advise you to try out Sabiki rigs. If not, a simple high low rig should do the trick, baited with small chokka strips, pilchard or bread.::tight:

I prefer not to use a sinker. When using a sinker your bait usually gets devoured by stumpnose, gorries, moonies or whatever except mullet!

Best way for me is to use a float with small hooks (slik hoekies). If the wind allows, you can use a weightless trace as well with only a swivel to get some distance.

Chum some sardines to attract almost immediate action!

I use a pill holder Drill holes in body of holder. Then drill a hole through lid and bottom and thread gut through these two holes. On the lid side I tie a swivel and on the bottom side I tie something like a sabiki rig. I fill the pill holder with minced sardine and bait bottom hooks with sardine.Tie to a light rod and in no time you have mullets all over the place. The minced sardine seeps through holes on sides and so attract them.Tight lines.

What are the rules for catching with live bait these days in the estuaries? Going to fish the mosselbay estuaries over December and I'm not clued up on what I may and may not do to target Kob/grunter. Want to braai one or two fish if I can and release the rest if I'm lucky enough to catch a few.

Hi if you have a cast net and the permit for it there shouldn't be a problem..im pretty sure your allowed to catch with live bait in Mosselbaai estuary..heard some big cob cuming out from that side..cob absolutely love fresh live bait.
