If you look at a barbels anatomy. Its eyes face up at a 45 degree andgle. Its longest barbels also face up. When they lie on the bottom the lie at a 20 degree angle upwards they dont bury themselves or lie flat. They are ambush and active hunters and presenting a bait in there eating zone instead of half suncken into the mud produces alot more and agressive bites. If you think about it. A barbrbels mouth is not inverted. It would require alot of enerfygor a large barbel to grt his head down and tail up to root soemthing out of chod or silt. He would much rather just suck something in at eye level or slightly above. Its worked well for me and i stick to it. Small fish i inject with a bit of air. Does the job well. So back to popping it makes perfect sense provided the fish diesnthave to swim up5 m to find the lure

so we have been having a jol with the popping!!! tried on a farm dam in standerton over the weekend. it went well, the water is very grey, so visibility is very poor. i would pop 4-6 times just after a cast. then give time and pop again 3-4 pops. managed 3x barbers in the farm dam.

Found the same thing Deisel, my success rate for snorre is much higher on either live bait or popping. But popping without a doubt is the most effective way for them on some dams. Personally I feel dams with high volumes of Moggels are better suited i.e. Krugersdrift, Vaaldam, Bloemhof, Erfenis, Gariep, etc. Popping up dead baits with foam has helped a helluva lot also.

Easy meals means no hunting and less reaction to live baits and lures. I mean eating boilies requires 0 energy apart from suckinf them up. So it makes sense that they wont turn on a pumpkin seed.

I have for long suspected the same, that in dams where catfish are used to passively feeding, they don't respond well to popping because they don't usually actively hunt. One example is a smallish dam where fly anglers catch catfish using the slapping technique where the tandem flies, after getting the cat's attention, can sink down to bottom where they are waiting for the 'food' to come to them. Popping hasn't resulted in any interest from cats in this same dam, I suspect because the lure remains suspended below popper and the catfish are unwilling to move up to intercept it. Just a theory...
