is my setup okay

Good Day all,

I am just starting off with saltwater lure fishing and would like to know whether my current setup is fine or too heavy.

I have a shimano exage (old spec) that i converted to a grinder rod, because of the conversion it is softer than it was in it's original form. I've paired that with a penn conflict ii 5000.

I have used the setup for bait fishing and generally throw a 4oz sinker with a small bait (prawn or worm) and if i got for a bit of a bigger bait, then i throw a 3 oz sinker.

I have tried it out, and i find that i have to throw at minimum 65g to get a good cast.

any advice would be appreciated.

p.s. I am looking at spinning from shore in the cape town waters, which i hear is not the easiest thing to do. ::slr::::slr::

Hi Zaahid

For spinning in Strand you could get away with a 9ft-10ft rod and size 4000 grinder loaded with a good 20lb braid. There you'd be targeting mainly elf and leerie.

Spinning from the cliffs would require some seriously beefy tackle, much like the rod you mention in your post.
