How badly have you got smoked by a fish

Inspired by the light tackle thread I though about how many times I have received a proper pakslae!

Biggest hiding, probably at Robberg Point hooked in to sharp nose bronzie an heavy tackle... bit me off after about 5min, the same five minutes it nearly spooled me on a torium 50...

Then I have hooked a few fish on a little shad setup, geelbek and Garrick which just didn't take prisoners, so I don't spin with 5lb braid anymore, should never have...

Houndsharks... need not say more it was a steep learning curve back in the day!

Cracker on gallie setup, when I moved to the Southern Cape I was reminded that thin wire circle hooks are fine for estuaries but to avoid disappointment tackle up...

So how bad of a hiding have you got from that mystery or not so mystery fish?

About 6 weeks ago I put out a nice little squid bait on a dingle dangle and 6/0 Mustad Demon circle hook. I was fishing my 13ft Waft Kabeljou and 6500 blue Azores loaded with 50lb braid and 0.7mm mono leader.

After about 20 mins something took my bait and ran about 150m-200m in a matter of seconds. I was able to do about three winds with the reel handle before the beast on the other end. woke up and took another 100m and broke me off on the reef. I stood there in total disbelief and eventually made another cast. After 5 mins I caught a massive pajama shark and shortly thereafter a fat kollie on a blob squid bait.

hahahah wonder what that could have been DBill?! Where were you fishing? Ja crackers taking gallie baits, smashed me up once or twice..big yellowtail before I got the hang of em and tackled up..and then still some..and I have a match still with a resident tsitsikamma gulley shark that wrapped up another member on here I read at some point in the exact same spot in the same manner..But that guy ate a live streepie, pulled me flat on and exage 11ft and I was up on a high rock and after pissing him off and locking up the drag on the SL 50 he nearly pulled me off the rocks and wrapped me up left right and all over the show at will..My gosh, I've only had 200lb tunas and 20kg tail pull like that..He was unstoppable..I guessing that thing is HUGE! I've landed dencent gullys and they give a decent pull but this thing assuming a gulley shark in the shallow/dry parallel reefs where I'm assuming no poensie would venture, this thing was unstoppable once it realized it was hooked..

Was fishing Hartenbos, the reefy section to the left of the river mouth. I suspect the culprit to be either a massive smoothy or young bronzie. Whatever it was made me feel like I was holding a 7ft spinning combo in my hands.

Probably biggest hiding was at Gouritsmond. After having the live mullet in the water for more than an hour i was floored just as I was about to reel in. Fish emptied my Saltist 50 in a matter of minutes, but luckily bit me off before I got spooled.

Hooked a Sharpnose on my speedmaster and Purglas Stroke 4 while fishing with a whole sardine and cone sinker looking for a blueray on the sandbank. Luckily it jumped and broke my leader on its first run.
Probably the worst hiding was while spinning on the las with my trusty 9vt6 exceller and 5000 grinder, hooking an absolute monster garrick on a spinner. The fish proceeded towing me around the point before the 20lb braid parted when my reel was almost empty and I had to try to stop the fish. We just stood there speechless.

Many years ago when i was still doing paddleski fishing, we launched early at Zinkwazi. Like an idiot i set out my mackrel to trawl out to the deep still whilst in the dirty water being pumped out at the river mouth. Seconds into the trawl i was almost ripped backwards and then violently sideways. I was in such a rush to get going, i had'nt loosened my drag. After managing to stabalize myself whilst being pulled backwards on the ski, i managed to loosen the drag and get the rod out of its holder. I never got to see what shark took me as it spooled me shortly after managing to get my rod in hand.

Jis lekker thread Dirk.
I Went for a strand reefs mission for kabeljou, hounds and spottys with a friend last year sometime.
We were fishing with proper reef tackle. I was fishing with a 20/40 with .60 tline mainline and a 1.2mil leader on a Technium heavy.
Fresh slimy occy legs and a whole lot of excitement for the mornings session. Boy did that fade quickly!
I made 5 casts hooked 5 fish and tied 5 new leaders on before excepting defeat. Proper schooling! Swam back with my tail between my legs.

In one spot I used to fish, the smoothies or spotties (I think) would cane me every time, so I slowly beefed up each section of my tackle. Eventually I was fishing with a 10m long 1.2mm thick nylon wind on leader, and a 120lb wire bite trace and a 9/0 circle hook. I put on my live kolstert and got picked up by and unstoppable steam train that headed for the structure, wrapped the leader around it, and pulled the hook strait and snapped off the barb. When I think of how hard you have to pull on a hook of that size to break it, and that fish was pushing against water, my mind boggles as to how strong that fish must have been.I can only assume it was a giant spotty.

Fishing with my Vengance 8ft, Penn Sargus 4000 spooled with 4.5kg mono I catch kollie after kollie in nice foamy water. I see a red crab in the pool next to me... and this is where the bad idea starts.

I catch it and hook it on a number 6 circle. Sending it back into the foamy water fully expecting a cracker to be waiting on the other side.

Well yes the cracker was there and waiting. Not 30 seconds down and my vengance goes down, all the way - almost flat stick. Fish is taking line at a rate of knots. Then bang, my rod front half of my rod goes flying into the water and after the second bang the line also calls it a day.

Kan mos nie met n mes na n gun fight gaan nie.

This for me is probably the reason why I love fishing so much. I just have to keep on chasing that one that got away, because you'll never know what it is till you actually catch it.

Biggest hiding I received was at Kleinbrak beach. A friend and I were wading out onto a long shallow bank to lob our big occy and chokka head baits in search of a duckbill. Well at that point I have only been fishing in the surf for about 4 months or so, and I wasn't very clued up with what leader and hook snoot etc. to use when targeting these beasts. Well, long story short, I used a 0.65mm leader and hook snoot. Got picked up after not even a minute, and it just kept on pulling and pulling with no end in sight. As soon as I saw my backing I started tightening the drag, but to no avail. I gave the drag one more turn, and there goes the linebw_l_) When I got to my tackle box to tie a new trace I could barely turn my spool with my hand. My friend went tight not long after that with a beauty of a duckbill.

Would have loved to see that one... slowly see the front section sliding down the line, never too be seen again

Got totally incinerated (way beyond smoked!) by a big blue off of Socotra. Emptied an International 130 before I could turn the boat. I saw the fish try and jump after the take and just the head and shoulders came out of the water. Don't want to guess the size but she was verging on uncatchable.

When I was still living in Haga Haga a few years ago I used to do quite a bit of dropshot for kob. One evening at Pullins decided to have one last cast as it was not dark and had forgotten to bring my headlamp with. Lure hit the ground and went tight, struck and figured I had got stuck. Gave it a few tugs to try and get loose which must have woken whatever it was up as it then proceeded to head to the horizon with no chance of stopping it on my 5000 Twinpower and 30lb braid! I knew my fate after only a few seconds and with about 30m left on the reel I locked up the spool and luckily it popped off on the leader! Not so leaker having to reel all of that line back in but at least it wasn't trailing off of a fish!

I went to the Lazarus banks a few years ago on one of the big charters. We caught some nice fish and as an angler we never get enough I still had a line in the water when we were on the way back. Towards the southern side of the banks I had a hit on a big Rapala fitted with big single hooks. As I lifted the rod out of the holder I could feel that this was a serious fish. I ease into on the drag on the Accurate Boss BX2-30 filled with 100lb braid. The fish did not slow down and the skipper was already cutting motors to start turning. I watch my reel and the amount of braid left was getting less with every second. I went into full lockdown on the reel drag, struggling to hold on the rod but even before the boat could start turning there was the ugly sound of line snapping on the spool. For a while after this we struggle to touch the reel as it was that hot. I never saw the fish and up to today it will remain a mystery and the one that got away.
