Reel handle wobble

Good Morning Guys.
I have Shimano Sahara- and Sedona 4000 reels.

After many seasons of spinning with them, their handles have quite a pronounced wobble. Its where you normally bend the handle for storage.

Has anybody tried to add a plastic spacer or something similar to eliminate this? Or do I need to buy a whole new handle?

Can you pull the handle (whole thing) away from the reel body as if you were trying to remove it from the reel when the opposite side screw is tight?

Hi Tackle.
No, the screw is as tight as possible.

The wobble is between the straight part of the handle and the part of where you hold the handle.

Regardless of the screw being as tight as possible, can you move the handle in and out as per the attached image if you grab the silver collar and pull it away from the reel body?

I’d first check in the side plates to see if both reels have bearings on both sides. That wobble sounds like worn nylon bushings. A way for tackle companies to shave some costs off lower priced model reels. Not sure about the Sahara but pretty sure the Sedona has nylon bushings. I might be wrong though. Simply replace those bushings with bearings.

Could be worn bushing or increased play between main and poinion gear due to normal use.
Gears do wear, its normal and not a sign of a bad reel, additional shim(s) between the bearing and main gear on the left hand side plate can get rid of the play.
Remember a small amount of gear lash is normal otherwise there is nowhere for the grease to stick to

Thanks Tackle and Mr Cricket.

I will open them and see if the problem is in the bushings or bearings.

Such nice spinning reels, just lying in the cupboard

That is what was done by my reel guy to my cheapie shimano a few years back when it got the same issue and it was the fix, maybe once more a thicker shim was added in its life till it became the backup-backup-lend reel and eventually redundant and given away and that reel still caught fish till eventually died. But ja been reading this thread and this was the fix as well as a shim somewhere where handle inserts? Long time ago.

I had the same problem on a Shimano Ultegra, tried plastic and metal inserts to reduce the play, didn't work to my satisfaction, eventually just used Pratley Steel to secure that while bend area, looks crap but works 100%.

Is it definitely in the handle and not in the main gear. Some of the lower level Shimano's have a bush that the main gear runs in and not a bearing

It is a nylon bush and is generally easily replaced with a R30-50 Stainless bearing from Kingfisher.

There is usually a spacer and in some models a Wave formed washer that locks onto the top of the main gear, In the Ultegra ranges of old these spacers broke out and were actually missing in reels we were brought to repair by the owners.

Check your reels Schematic, just to make sure the parts of the handle are all there. If missing a 1-2mm sacer will resolve the issue

Thanks Guys
Will definitely have a look Enigma and I may go with DJP's glue the two parts of the handle together.

Once got a spinner in a "pail O reels" deal that had a cotter pin where the pin is under the arrowhead in your photo. Functioned fine, but nasty sloppy. Found a correct sized SS roll pin for a tight replacement and dremmeled off the excess after installation. Worked for me.
