Hi guys. I’m switching over to grinders for my shore rock & surf fishing. I would like some reel recommendations regarding size. Rod I need a reel for is an Assassin Horizon Zero Extra Heavy. I’m toying between either a Saragosa 20000 or 25000. (Also interested in other reels recommendations should you have any) What will be the best setup for casting distance, I know technique etc all place a roll but what reel size will fit best with mentioned rod. Fishing will be a mix of edibles and some smaller sharks, occasionally larger rays and sharks. I reckon both sizes will also work for my spinning for Gt’s etc but will mainly use it for my rock & surf fishing. If you have this rod what will you put on it? I realise this might have been asked at some point so apologies if that’s the case. Thanks.

Hi, I'm no reel/tackle expert, but those are big reels for edibles and small sharks. In my understanding that setup is suitable for bigger sharks and very heavy for edibles fishing, esp spinning. Hopefully someone with more tackle knowledge can assist.

Houtarm wrote:Hi, Hi Houtarm. Yes, that makes sense. I don’t have many big sharks around my area but rays like smooth black sting rays gets well over a 100kgs here and some big eagle rays. I will also do an odd trip for bigger bronzies etc On the spinning front it will be for PE10 to PE12 outfits. The reason for thinking that size of reel is for the big spool diameter which I believe aids in casting distance. Basically what size of reel will compliment the rod the best for casting. Obviously very open minded to all opinions. Cheers

a fishing rod/ reel set needs to be balanced. a bigger reel will not give you more distance when casting. it only gives your more capacity for holding line/ braid. I also see it is a 7-9 ounce rod with a pe rating of 4-5 https://basilmanning.co.za/assassin-horizon-zero-402709.html for sale here in RSA at Basil manning. look at reels where if needed, after sales service is present. i'm not a fan of the top end reels. salt water will attack top end reels as well as mid range reels. seems reels are made today, to last their warrantee period and then it is throw away from there.

willem wikkel spies wrote:a fishing rod/ reel set needs to be balanced. Hi. It was Basil Manning that recommended the 25000 size. The reason for the 25k is because it have a bigger spool and will play a big role when it comes to casting... The bigger the spool the longer it will take for line to come off... the lesser the resistance The above is a direct quote from them, it does make sense as in Europe they all use those grinders with wide long spools but they are very shallow so line capacity will be an issue. It’s always worth getting more opinions from other experience anglers hence I posted on here to see what others have experienced.

if its good advise.....could be. also remember your build. swinging a big rod and reel to get maximum from it is easier said then done.
