Which Drone?

I am in the market for a drone. It will be used mostly for fishing but also for what drones do, record great videos pretty far from the operator. Family toy beach toy spy camera u name it, but fishing mostly.

I am not looking to target non-eds. Mostly edibles. If anything I will probably use the drone to drop rapalas, swimming lures 3 - 500m out more than I will use it to drop large baits.

Spot predator fish, drop lure etc.

Mavic Pro 2 has my attention as does Phantom 4 Pro. It appears as if the Phantom has better payload should I want to take out larger bait however the Mavic is the superior drone.

However, there is a new player on the market in the form of the Gannet pro. This drones looks very suitable to fishing with its waterproof and floating design. However it is new on the market and untested. I have also not seen any review on this drone as yet.

I dont wish to pack up because of a little rain etc. So the Gannet has my attention due to this. Well that and the water wetness that comes with Rock and Surf fishing.

Any opinions on the above from some experienced drone fisherman?

If you want to use it for fishing my advice would be to buy a purpose built fishing drone.

The cuta copters or a sharkan would do the job perfectly.

The mavic isnt going to be right in terms of lifting weight and the phantom will work but not lift nearly as much as a cuta or sharkan.

Mavic + gannet release mechanism = R23 000-28 000
phantom 4 pro+ gannet release mechanism = +-R30 000

Cuta or sharkan with 2 batteries = R14 000 - R18 000 (delivered and it will have the capability to lift 2-5kg depending on the model)

Pro's on the cuta/sharkan - made for fishing, alot more robust, lifting capacity a lot better.

Con's - no camera

If you really want a drone with a camera i wuold then suggest buy a cuta or sharkan and then buy the new DJI mavic air for around 8k

Looks good. Waterproof. Can even land and take off in water. Water proof remote too. No camera but I dont care for that feature can add myself. 5kg dead lift.

If you are not concerned about the camera then get the Sharkan. The Gannet is a very good option but only available in Jan/Feb. The price is something to consider also.

You shouldn't worry too much about the 5kg lift if you not gonna drop a 5kg bait. The Gannet Pro plus does 3.5kg if I recall. Having said that, the torque to lift that weight does make the drone more stable in-flight especially in windy conditions though. So if you looking to future proof, then its a reasonable consideration.

Back to the price, for the price of a Gannet Pro Plus without camera, you could get a Sharkan and three batteries. And you will need extra batteries when fishing.

Also, the Sharkan Enigma is waterproof also.

Well us fisherman don't necessarily spend our lives doing only one form of fishing. Couple of years back I was into Bass fishing. Now days I dont even want to swim in fresh water let alone fish in it. Few years from now I may be interested in Shark fishing. Who knows.

Will check out the other models too. Am only looking at pulling the trigger in January / February in any event because that's when the funds will clear up. I must be honest my heart is set on the Gannet but it is very new on the market and I am looking forward to some reviews. I will look into the Sharkan and Cuta in the meantime.

Couple things you should know about Gannet:

The price you see is ex vat. Secondly you are actually charged in US dollars so the price you see is never going to be the price you pay.

The Sharkan and Cuta are tried and continue to be tested. My mate has over 700 drops on his Cuta and no issues. Other mate has over 1000 on his Sharkan and no issues.

You just need to figure out how to choose hobby drones for novice users. A beginner needs to understand that the smaller the drone, the lower the likelihood that it will be destroyed. In addition, the downsizing reduces the risk to people, animals and fragile structures in a collision.
