Hi Guys, I've really been struggling to get the correct info and I really hope you guys can help. Can you use a small rubber duck in the sea to catch fish/recreational use without skippers license or any other licenses/certificate? The boat provider will give a certificate for the boat. Small referring to, 3.2 meters and 10hp engine. The idea is not to go out further than 1km into the sea. I'm excited to hear your responses and very excited to get myself a boat. Thanks Regards Eugene

Here are all the regulations. http://www.samsa.org.za/Marine%20Notices/2011/MN%2013%20of%202011%20Small%20vessels%20Policy.pdf You will still need safety gear, be inspected and have identification markings on the boat

I would seriously reconsider going to sea with a10hp single engine.[if allowed]. A surf launch in Kzn would certainly end badly.

Ja look I only gave the legal requirements. Personal opinion is its like asking can you walk across Australia without any backup in the middle of Summer. In theory yes it can be done but only the EXTREMELY experienced should ever attempt it and the people experienced enough to actually do it will tell you you are not well in the head to even think of doing it. Same with hunting elephants with a .22/ Lions with a butter knife. a 3.2M and 10hp inflatable is what we use for specimen fishing and if the wind picks up on the dam it gets wet and unsafe and that is NOTHING compared to the sea.

You'll find your answers on page 9 of the attachment from Timjan. Other than "no you can't" it would really not be advisable to do so, wind, currents etc. When it comes to the sea, things go South in a blink of an eye.

I stand to be corrected here, but as far as i am aware you will still need to have a VHF DSC radio and that means you will have to do the course to get a license Last edited on Tue Dec 3rd, 2019 12:38 pm by MichaelK |

The Act makes a clear distinction regarding small craft with less than 15hp. This is designed to cover small tenders, SUP, kayaks, surfboards, rescue boards etc. Yes you can go to sea. You do NOT need a skippers. You do NOT need certification You DO need to obey local launch rules. (this may be your downfall as most harbours and beach launches in the Cape require a skippers and registration) You DO need the relevant safety gear. That does NOT include a radio. Go down to Hangklip or Bettys during crayfish season and you will see all manner of floating contraptions. It is assumed that you will have a modicum of common sense and not try to catch tuna or surf launch.

The problem with common sense is that it's not that common. No offense intended.

Thank you for all the feedback, I've taken everything to heart. I'm seriously considering getting my skippers and rather doing it the right way.
