Best braid to use on multiplier

Hi guys.

What brand, breaking strain/dia and/or other characteristic would you guys recommend for a multiplier which will be used for surf casting? Also any other tricks and or references for using braid on a multiplier will be appreciated.

Im using 75Lb Hmp on my Trini 16A (Magged) i use it in the surf off the rocks etc and do push it sometimes

Thanks tubs. Don't know hmp braid. Sorry for asking but is it a relatively stuff braid and any coating on it. Also do you have the diameter on the braid?

HMP 75lb has an actual dia of around 0.43mm.
It is coated, but the coating is not a thick waxy one. 

Stiff? Hmm. Not as stiff as Fireline
Don't fall into the trap of comparing it to some braids that tell great big fibs about their dia.

A braid that has an ACTUAL BREAKING STRAIN (un-knotted) of around 75lb should be around 0.42-0.46mm (excluding hollow core braids)
Also look at Fireline it is well behaved on multipliers

Thanks TH. The little research that I've done to date suggest that a larger dia braid cast better compared to smaller and thus my question about the dia is get some sort of indication of what min dia i can go for.

It's not so much that thicker line casts better, but that you can tune a reel's behavior with line diameter: 

As the spool empties, the diameter of the filled spool reduces so it feeds less line per revolution, thicker line will empty a spool faster and reduce the amount of line being released.

This is very useful with square geometry spools (full dia is greater than or equal to spool width) like on the Trini 16A and 20A.

Thicker and stiffer braids are also easier to unpick when something goes wrong.
Hollow core braids are nice, but expensive.

If I recall, Cuban Cigar swears by Fireline on his multipliers - I like it too. 

What reel are you using?

Thanks again TH. At this time I'm leaning towards a Avet MXL or XL with mag control. Is there perhaps a spool shape in your experience that will also help when casting with braid?

Was also thinking about what potential advantages hollow braid will have over normal braid?

Min breaking strain or dia you will recommend in fireline for a test?

Personally I find under-square ie width greater than diameter easier, but don't sweat it too much - you can tune it with the magnet and spool level.

Friend of mine has the MXL 6/4 Raptor.

Fireline - old spool markings:

20lb - breaks at around 50lb; 0.36mm
30lb - breaks at around 70lb; 0.44mm

Newer labels (we get the stuff labeled for the European market now in SA) I have yet to figure out.....
I bought a spool of (if memory serves) 23kg - I thought it would be the old 20lb.
It was the old 30lb - could not get it onto my, admittedly small, reel.
I swore a bit.

Hollow core is nice in that you can splice it together for a knotless 100% join.

Can also splice mono leader into the end.
Start with the 30lb Fireline - safer and at an educated guess, you should get around 550m on the MXL 6/4

You can also braid stitch non hollow braid together for a 100% connection, just can't splice the mono to it...Also what do you intend to fish for with the avet, as you can fit magnetic cast assist to almost any multiplier that does not come with one you could choose any reel that best suits your casting and then modify it to be easy enough to cast.

Also HMP gets 2 thumbs up from me.

We moved to New Plymouth New Zealand about 4 months ago. Although species wise you can't fish for much, yellowtail do come in very close. The idea is to put a setup together for targeting them from the surf with livebait. The lever drag will help with the livebait and the also having a good idea of what drag you are applying to keep them from the rocks.
