fishing clubs burnt fingers

so I reluctantly joined a fishing club/ ski boat club.
initially I only wanted to be part as a social member but as it was a new club, and there should not have been politics I decided to give it a go .

I was convinced to become a full member which allowed me to part take in interclub comps.

so it was done.
all went well initially.
we did some comps and we won quite a few of them.

we created a WhatsApp group to keep all members informed on social matters as well as interclub comps etc.

we did the all inland comp in March which we won, but on that trip I decided that this type of fishing was not for me.
in any case, I later informed the chair person that this type of angling was not for me and that I will only stay on as a social member.
I like fishing on my own, learning, maybe the hard way but I like making my own TV.

so, Saturday night, the vice chairperson had too much to drink, I suspect and as the wp played so kak, he was quite upset.
on the WhatsApp group, the vice chair person posted pictures of his past boat which went through heavy seas.
they nearly got into trouble that day.

in any case, a normal member informed him, that there was no reason to brag about the incident and all hell broke loose on the group between the 2x persons.
it eventually ended up where the vice chair person stated to the ordinary member to go F him self and that he does not belong in the club.

that was the last straw for me!!!
the vice chairman did later apologize for his behavior on the group the foloowing day.
I decided to resign completely from the club in light of this matter.
I have informed the club that I did not condone this behavior and that the person should be removed from management totally.

i was told, because he apologised, we should not kick him while he is down.

really, what message does it send to other normal members?
the vice chairperson will swear you if he likes it and nothing will happen to him.

next year i will do all fishing comps, the ones with prizes with my own boat, with my own friends.

I have since deleted the tread regarding the new fishing club as I cannot advise people to join it when things like this happens.

usually they have enough self-respect to peacefully resign

Half the problem with clubs are that people go to open forums, WhatsApp, Sealine, Facebook, etc to discuss their issues (argue) instead of dealing with it in person and having a beer afterwards.

Seems it's the attention seeking nature of people, especially if they have a few doppe in before sorting out the issue.

I also have heard of disputes in clubs and from what I heard its seems like money and power game (Like chairman or captains) who only want to push forward their agendas and opINIONS

I always thought of joining a club for the reason of learning the art of the hobby that I practice or at least try to practice and enjoy as I am not a professional angler but merely one that goes and wet a line when I can which usually means by myself and the club scene looked inviting as to the fact that meeting other fellow fisherman would mean that there would always be company to join when I do venture to the coast.

So I attended a few open day sessions hosted by different organisations hoping to feel enlightened about the prospects of joining one of these clubs.

Now knowing myself I like to enquire and ask questions if I feel the need for clarification on something that peeks my interests and so on and with some senior members as they portray themselves would answer and some would just shrug you off with an attitude as to say what are you talking about.

And this has completely put me off from attending any club invitations regarding bait clinics and comps and so I find myself fishing alone as always and trying to learn the adventure one cast at a time.

Simple, joining a club;

1) Join for the benefits = free launch / free inspections / free tips...

2) I don't mingle with 99% of the people there anyway

3) I do NOT attend their skinder braai + bullshit + not into groupie stuff

4) My kids can fish in the clubs grounds (safe) + safe parking

5) I pay the minimum amount.. just the club fees...

BUT our club is at the beach / river... not inland.. Then should any member / chief Vice bru try to "trek slim with me" using his position... I will tell him piss off...

Yae, that seems a bit of an arrogant type of person, luckily not all clubs contain these arrogant type of people.
I've found that these arrogant type of people are also always the ones who will come stand 5 meters from you and try cast over you to a spot, because they feel they are owed something in life, and their needs outweigh your time that you want to have a relaxing fishing day.

Best I've come to realize to meet and fish with new people is to when you go out fishing and maybe on your way to a spot to stop at them and have a chat, you will from the get go have a feeling if the person would like company or not. If you have a nice chat ask if you can join, most people would not mind and then you can learn some things from them or visa versa.

You know that is the worst I had a few incidents like that happen to me already and you know when it is extremely sad is if you hook up they all over you and keeping the undersize fish they catch but I suppose that is just how some individuals operate.

Not to sound disrespectful, but i think you need to grow a thicker skin. This sort of behaviour happens everywhere even on this forum. To put your tail between your legs and run because of someone elses actions that bears no bearing on your membership is simply unnecessary and silly.

All clubs no matter how elite and fancy have their internal politics. The secret is to mind your own buisness and stay out of the nonsense.

At my club once ive come back from a nice day of fishing and chose to have a few beers at the clubs pub, when the dronkies start gossiping, i just walk away and chat to someone else.

Why let someone elses actions or behaviour affect your life vvbafvv

Ditto, I keep to myself by choice, don't really mingle with the a/holes... but will not keep my mouth for an Admiral... if I know I am in the right... simple..

look, clubs can be a great avenue for a novice to learn some stuff.
so they are not all bad.

to other downside to a club is that:
1. there is only so much knowledge in your club. it is thus a limit to the club, especially a inland club.

2. it does give new anglers a opportunity to get to go fishing.

3. members do share their knowledge as fishing clinics are held regularly.

4. new friends are met and made and fishing opportunities are more forthcoming.

we also do not drink, even on fishing trips, if you want to drink, it is up to you "we dont have enough time to drink and fish"

lucky for me, we have made new friends, good ones.
we now arrange for our own social fishing trips and we share costs.
the cost for a team of 3x anglers for a weekend interclub comp is about R15k per trip for 1,6 days of fishing from inland to the coast.

the time to fish on such a event is also not enough.
its a rush from the one aspect to the other, trying all and gaining nothing!!!

in January 2019 we did a trip down to Sodwana, 3x anglers fishing for 4 days and the trip costs were about R7k in total "boat down at soddies, accommodation was shared as the 1x angler has a place down there"

when we do Richards bay or Durban, the costs is more, but not close to it.
our social trips are also much longer.
we are all self employed and as such, we can decide to go on 99%.
so weather does not affect us as such as we can choose when to do such a trip.
canceling such a trip or delaying it has no cost implications for us

there is no aspect of competitiveness then between us, as my rod is anyone's rod.
we learn from each other and teach each other.
we have had some great success and things are working for us


and we have fun, moerse lekker fun.
and this is the most important aspect in my life when fishing!!!!


also note, I do not want to achieve any colors or something like that.
I just want to fish.
if you wanna achieve anything, then take it as it comes sitting with the club politics.

I'm also the only member, who does rock and surf angling.
I have been blessed with some big fish from the beach and in this aspect, im no novice.

other members do want to learn more about it, and they were eager that a tackle box needed to take place.
this will not happen unfortunately now.


I do not think that this is a aspect of running to social media, as im already done.

this tread will advise other anglers, who might be thinking of joining, that there is aspects to consider, and to see if their skin is thick enough when thinking about joining a fishing club, be it ski boat or rock and surf or papgooi.

Vir enige klub/organisasie/beheerliggaam selfs vir n politieke party in die publieke oog om te oorleef, is streng selfbeheer, disipline, respek, toepassing van disipline & die beginsels om te oorleef as diegene wat in beheer is, sodanig optree sonder enige uitsonderings.
Daai uitsonderings maak mense twyfel in geloofwaardigheid & so n klub verloor sy integriteit.
Ek het self soortgelyke ondervinding ervaar.

Daars niks fout met die liewe ou standaard van "tolerate no shit".
