I was fishing wilderness the other day, and a guy pulled out a nice santer on a small sardine bait.

First time I have ever seen a "red" fish come out from the beach.

Has anyone else seen this species come out on the shore before?

You get them from the shore quite often in Port Elizabeth (Cape Recife area specifically).

I got a baby in December in the Kleinbrak area. Bait used was sardine belly.

I have also heard from locals that Santer can be caught in the Knysna lagoon.

We caught quite a few from the bricks at Hartenbos towards Kleinbrak already, but small though.
Also got size one's last year March in the river at Witsands, a first for me.

Also catch plenty juveniles from the shore near Wilderness - and then last year a proper sizer on sardine just before a storm cycle came in.

Legal size on Santer is 30cm.

There was a big upwell in wilderness so thats why they were caught..I've caught them in blombos and tsitsikamma from the side to confirm sparra.. My biggest one was over 3kg! but from a boat and he came up from the reef to eat a sabiki while a very large sarda sarda was on the line also so it was a RAD fight on the light rod!

And this explains the exact conditions in which the said santer was caught. Mr Sparrabos, you amaze me with your expertise of the Southern Cape_seal1_
