Not sure what the registration system is for SL nowdays (it's years since I registered) but maybe introduce a CAPTCHA so the bots can't register.

They are bloody annoying.

What's the best way of reporting? Should we PM the mods?

I think their software version of UltraBB, software that is used to run this site, is unsupported, and old.

Which could lead to hacks like cross site scripting on the site.

Even the UltraBB (http://www.ultrabb.com/), looks unmaintained

Totally spoils the "recents" page when more than half of the topics is this bull.

I have reported all of Hongwei28's posts individually, but they still there...

Why can't these fake members be removed and banned? I saw in the instructions when I signed up yesterday that fake profiles are not allowed.

The thing is the idiot already registered on Jan 2'nd but is only posting now.

What Admin must actually do is go through all registrations for Jan and look for overseas people and ban all of them.

But its easier to put on a band aid than take away the knife.

This problem is getting out of hand. It will be the downfall of Sealine if it continues unchecked. Admin PLEASE do something, even if just deleting the posts??? There are posts and usernames, eg Hongwei28, that have been reported many times and there is just no action taken???

Some of us still enjoy, support and contribute to Sealine on a regular basis, to me this lack of communication and action from admin is a slap in the face.

Because nothing is happening to the spammers they will now start to post so much that the only thing sealine is good for is looking at SPAM.

Guys, please don't blame the admins for this. this is a forum at the end of the day which means that anybody can join and anybody can post. This forum would not be what it is today if we didn't have that type of privileges.

A possible fix for the issue:
Any new members who are trying to join should have to answer a question as to why they are interested in joining the site, and admin can vet them before they are allowed access to the site.

Alternatively, a rule for new members posting where the post gets vetted by admins before it's posted.

I was thinking along those lines as well... When I joined one of the other forums (think it was boatfishing) I had to ID the fish in their logo before becoming a member. SL could do something like asking what the common name is for a Cape Salmon... And if you're not from round here, give them the chance of mailing the mods for the answer... Just a thought.

Its a good suggestion, but where are the admins? They used to be here all the time a few years ago. Members report posts and literally nothing is done. People send emails and they never get a reply. Sealine admins dont get paid to operate the site and we get that people have lives outside of Sealine and life gets busy sometimes but lately its looking like they left the building altogether.

THEN make one or 3 guys ADMINS that are currently on the site daily... the same 50 odd people are on this forum daily.... choose a few people and sort this BS posts out before the last remaining faith fulls also jump ship..

I said in another post i cant seem to find exactly this will happen.

Because nothing is done they will start to post more and more. Today 10 out of 14 posts today is now spam. And wait its still going to get worse.

There is allot that can be done but I am sorry to say Emperor have left the building. This post is a obvious outcry by the last people still actually using the site and not even one reply from Emperor even acknowledging what is happening

I also think we need more admins/mods with more time or energy to police the site. People who still enjoy the Sealine experience compared to other social media platforms or forums.
I don't mind to be told to take a chill pill, maar as ek nog meer hengel gaan ek letterlik nie meer vriende of familie hê nie. Dink ek push al reeds die boundaries.
Willem die "slap in the face" gedeelte was dalk bietjie drasties, maar ek dink nogsteeds die punt wat ek probeer maak het is van toepassing.
Wat gebeur as 'n user begin pornografie of rasisme of enige ander onaanvaarbare ding post?

Houtarm, maybe you should take the family and friends out with you. Get them hooked and you will have lots of fishing buddies. Make the circle bigger.

Sealine will never die because you will always have your memories and the knowledge you gained from here, and I'm sure you have met decent people here too.

Spam is annoying but once it's gone, you will always find that something else will turn up and make you mal. It's life mate. Do what you can to the best of your ability but don't let the kakness get to you. Life is way too short. Go fish. You could be doing a lot worse with your life

Regards,

Its a good suggestion, but where are the admins? They used to be here all the time a few years ago. Members report posts and literally nothing is done. People send emails and they never get a reply. Sealine admins dont get paid to operate the site and we get that people have lives outside of Sealine and life gets busy sometimes but lately its looking like they left the building altogether.

There are admins. but their hands have been tied. No administrative authority. Only Emps can do something about anything.

Howsit Bennie
Howsit Ouens.... there are admins yes!!
As said we can’t do what we would like to make it better!

I am one of the admins here as well as the FB page, and have put a few silly/stupid questions in so that the “knuckle-heads” don’t just jump in and post spam.
That being said I don’t add people who Don’t answer the silly questions asked.
Yet I see they may/might be added by “other” admins!!

(just saying)!

I do know that admins and mods cant do anything on the site anymore.I also know that its because that time reefman left and deleted all his posts to start his own website that all the access/rights was removed.
But I also do know that one one or 2 idiots need to click on those links or for someone else to pick up that spam can be posted for free on the site and you will have porn sites being posted what then will it also be here weeks after it was posted. This site is being used by kids how will you feel if your kid sees porn because he was on sealine?Do you want to tell me nobody has contacted Emps? Where does the "report" button go? I have now stopped pressing it as its purely a waste of my time as NOTHING is done.

If Emperor was contacted and nothing is done about it then I think its time to move on...

Lots and Lots of posts are gone / removed - not only when those left... Even some my stuff in 'collections" are gone, I think they changed servers ?? I cannot remember or that was the theory at the time, if you look at UA - it's really dead, 1 or 2 posts per day...

Is there not one person here that knows EMPS personally?
can no one speak to the man directly ?
All he needs to do is allow other admins to have more -power-.... and swelect a few more that are more active on the site..

the only thing troubling you guys are the current spam.

just deleted 4 treads now.
about 30 odd for the week so far.

again, we can only delete them.
we cannot ban the users.

we do not have the fights like in the old days.
thus we do not need another 10 mods.

I will see if I can hold of emps and see what he advises.

will keep you guys updated.

you guys are missing some points here.

we had such lovely mods on here.
they were the best a man could get...…..

AND THEY NEARLY SHUT THIS FORUM DOWN

so, because of them.....other mods priveledges were taken away to a certain point.
so we will have to do, with what we have for now.

the infights are much less then what they used to be.
apart from some spam, nothing much needs to be moderated for now.

as long as the guys stick to the rules.....

Its just an automated bot flooding us with this cr@p, I'd imagine.. We need some sort of verification with account creation and these bot accounts deleted!

Question, if Emperor has no time to devote to Sealine why doesn't he sell it to someone else?

a easy question to answer:

He is giving most of his time to his church!!!!
so Sealine will come 2nd.
that is why we are still here, to keep all running smoothly.

if you look at it, we don't have many chiefs here but much more Indians.
we don't actually need more chiefs, as our Indians are well behaved.
we do not have problems on the site, apart from some spam

Sealine is not there to make money!!!!
Sealine is there to give us a platform where we can interact etc.

currently Sealine is running off sponsors.
it is just enough, to keep Sealine running.

We will need to look at more sponsors to keep it running in order for us to enjoy it.

so sit back and relax while teh cat is away.... let us mice play nicely!!

Im not saying we need more chiefs, but no offense if the site owner had more time to spend on it then maybe it can gain more members and activity, look at a site like Bloody decks as an example or Alan Tani reel repair

it is not the owners responsibility.
it is ours.
we need to create more treads.
we need to educate other users.
we need to make sea line great, Emps cannot do it on his own.

it is in our hands to take Sealine to new heights.

it is actually great that the site owner is absent.
then there is no forcing of how things are done.

I have seen it on other forums.
they get ruled like pawns, where is the fun it that?

here we have the freedom to create, state etc.

interesting that Boatfishing rules are...... well no rules.

and it never gets out of hand, because the guys respect each other.

on Sealine i will allow most things apart from using swear words as children do access the site

also i will not tolerate personal attacks.
if you canot win the arguement on facts and the discussion at hand, then refrain from making personal comments.

Ok, here's my 5c....

A few years ago, Sealine was the best fishing site around. So many guys i know would look forward to their next log on, whether at work or at home. Then came the keyboard warriors. We know we're supposed to stick to size and bag limits, but as if that wasnt enough, the holier than thou started gunning people for keeping legit fish. At the time it was a pleasure to see the fish they caught and the back stories. Then it all just collapsed. everyone stopped posting pics of what they caught, when, where and how. Yes, some of us do our bit to try and keep our fishing areas clean, some of us catch and release and some of us stick to the rules, but the party poopers took over and messed things up for everyone, No matter what you post, there'll be some idiot criticizing. thats my take on it

it is true.
Miles left Sealine.
if you took notice it was due to a bunny hugger, a well educated angler who came over a bit too strong for everyone's liking.

we even call each other at times, then we talk rubbish lol.

Sealine i think has the most topics and posts.
there is so much info here.

the guys were taught how to do reports and eventually miles put all together in a much better way.
he is a great angler, but a better person as he did not delete all his posts when he left.

we need to take notice,
that we have guys participating in treads.
then we have the roof kykers.
then we have the newbies.

the current vibe on Sealine i feel is quite welcomming to new commers.
there is so much info that we only need to steer them in the right direction.

the older user who now refrains to post catch reports, still do log on.
they are now more roof kyking, they will ask them selves, what can they post more.

how much can one write about fishing for elf?
only so much, in any case tomorrow is different from today and last week.

so, lets move on!!!

Not 100% correct, he took offence because i used pictures of commercial catches of kob and yellowtail filling the back of a bakkie to compare treknet catches filling the back of the bakkie.

We are good buddies now, live about a decent throw with a half brick away from eachother... And have long conversations about the state of the Breede river, taxed fish, people not counting taxed fish as a fish out of the system and so on....

These are all very good insights but none of them answers the question about the issue of having a seemingly completely absent forum owner who does not have the time to give inputs or give full administrative powers to the one or two people that still moderate. PS Marthin thanks for sensible posts!
