Good day!

I'm completely "nat agter die ore" when it comes to fishing... I've only caught maybe two fish in my life from a plaasdam with alot of help from a good friend. Mind you, I don't even know what I caught! :hyst:

I recently bought a hunterski kayak mainly to take my son out on paddling adventures, but then started to entertain the idea of fishing as well. For now I'll mainly stick to estuaries and rivers, and later add some ocean fishing to the mix as I gain confidence and skill.

I'm based in the Winelands and regularly go to Hermanus and Witsand. Looking forward to getting rigged and learning to fish!

Welcome V8

A great form of fishing...
Search for kayak fishing ( paddle ski forum) and there is plenty of info there.

At Witsands using a steady paddle with a spoon will definitely get a Leerie or use repala type lures.
Casting paddle tails from the kayak for kob will be good too, a very slow retrieve here, want to bump the bottom.

Want a very safe sea experience venture a little further to Mossel bay and launch from Santos Beach, great for yellow tail on rapala early in the morning, literally 200m from the shore. The launch is a "dam" launch, lol.

When it comes to the ocean, safety above everything else, life jacket, flares etc and tether yourself to the yak, 3xcept when launching and beaching of course.

As Edskoi suggested u tube is full of info, but don't take too much heed to the Americans as they seem to take everything on the boat, barring the kitchen sink. Keep it minimum, you're in Africa, lol.

Practice catch and release and have fun.

Regards
Mark

Thanks guys! I'm very excited to get started, will go shop for a rod and reel today. Life jackets are on the way.

@Keiskamma I'd love to hook a kabeljou at Witsand, thanks for all the tips!
