Which reel

I am not sure which reel to pick. I have about R1500 to spend and I want a good quality reel for my 12 foot rod. Thank you for any help in advance.

Hi Jakes,

Aventa comes with 3 or 4 spools I think and got slow oscillation, not too bad for entry level, but with that budget you should look at Shimano Baitrunner BTR XT RB, a little bit more than your budget but will last many years:

had a look at the okuma aventa

it does look nice.
the extra spool just might swing it for me.

fresh water tackle are normally not abused as such.

it is light fishing, no heavy sinkers etc.

so fresh water reels will outlast salt water reels where one uses heavy sinkers and bait.

shimano is also good.

after sales service might be a issue but when its quite cheap, rather dispose and buy new when done.

so with 3x spools the reel might eventually fail, by that time.....bin it

Thank you for the advice. I am thinking about the aventa. Is the shimano BTR XT RB a lot better than the aventa?

I know the xtr models were top of the range.
it seems like it is the new range "i might be confused here"

it is a very good reel, all the bells and wistles.

do you need it?
just if you want to keep up with teh jones...or if you want to waiste money, imho.

again, fresh water does not put real pressure on a reel!!

if the aventa has slow ocilation, then that is good for nice line lay.

if you are just starting off angling, then there should be no concern with the aventa's.

just make sure, you do get the assistance back up service if needed.

I have been fishing for about a year now and I want to start taking part in competitions. Is the XTR models discontinued because I can't find them anywhere. Is the shimano XT RB too much overpriced?

Hi Jakes,

You get what you pay for, though I mainly use okuma reels as they are budget friendly and mostly reliable as I don't get to spend too much time on the water, if you want to do comp fishing I would def recommend shimano as parts are easier to acquire , you can order additional spools from most reputable tackle shops , not bashing okuma their mid tier reels are good but, would never last as long as the shimano, if looked after properly the shimano will easily give 10 years of service.
another budget choice would be okuma ceymar baitrunners, each reel comes with a spare spool , priced around R600-700, not too bad has served me well.

regards

I think I am going to get the shimano XT RB but I am not sure which size to get and also I want to put the yellow line on but which brand and which strength should I put on.

X-aero #1
XTR-RB #2
DL and Aventa #3 and level pegging although the Aventa has a better line lay and will most likely out last the Shimano. For competitive angling the patented Shimano quick release spool gives it the edge.

Is the XTR RB the same as the XT RB because I can't seem to find anything about the XTR RB. What type of line should I put on.

So if I don't take the X aero it will be better to take the aventa

it all depends on your needs.

competitive angling one needs some extra spools.
the aventa has them in one kit.

the okuma avanta is a nice reel.
had a lekker look at it.

it should last a long time. no reason to worry.

but using it to tackle big bus barbel for years it might fail over time.

gio have a good look at both reels.
take it from there
