J-Bay - spinning

Hi Guys,
I have been reading everything I can all over the place about where to go and what to use ect. I am coming from Australia and I arrive on Sunday for a week to visit my Parents who stay in Marina Martinique and then we head off down to Sedgefield for a weekend, and then last stop will be Mosselbay(the point) for a week..
I am bringing a small travel rod and a couple lures/spoons so not very well equipped for massive surf fishing, but I was hoping to get some time to go throw a line and maybe catch something to cook...

My Dad(in-law) who is not a fisherman says that he has got another rod for me as well as the "Fish like a local" book so that might be a option as well.
I am really just looking to see what I should be targeting and where about. Was hoping to get a couple elf(if they are still around).
Any help is appreciated....

Hi Big Steve
There is a small pier within walking distance from Marina Martinque.  The locals target shad there on spoons, and full sardines (with no sinker).  This is generally done on the high tide. The pier can get very crowded, however I found the fisherman to be very friendly.

If you use small hooks and pieces of sardines, you will get lots of pinkies and caranteen. on the side of the pier.  If I find that the pinkies are destroying every bait , I would catch one and use it as a live bait.

On the beach by super tubes ask some surfers where the bottom keyhole is where they paddle out, it’s a big gap in the rocks, making for a decent path for your lures. Lots of decent sized schools of shad there in the evenings, and you can watch them chase and smash top waters from far out all the way into the gully on flat days.

Thanks for that. I have been fishing at the pier near walskipper in the past so will defs give that a go. I also like the sound of the spot near Supertubes and my brother-in-law used to surf down there so think I know where the keyhole is. Appreciate the tips and will put up a report when I am back in AUS..

Hi Guys,
So I am back in Aus now and this is the report.
We arrived on the 16th Sep and I was out at the pier near Walskipper n the morning of the 17th...
Just had a small 6.6 foot travel rod and a couple of lures that I brought with me.was there at first light and tied on a 92g stick bait. Hooked mu first cast with a small Elf, but did not manage to land it.
After a couple more casts and managed to land 2 elf around the 40cm... then think it was too late so headed back to the Marina.
For the next 5 days this was the case. I would go fishing either Early in the morning before sun up, or get there about 1 hour before sunset. Would cast my stick bait, halco twisties or spoons when there was light, or switch to bait when it was dark....
Caught at lease two elf every time between 30cm and 40cm... biggest one would have been about 46cm. Think I also hooked a small cob one night but could not land it. Best night was 4 Elf

Then headed down to Mosselbay for a week, and only really caught small stuff of the rocks with my kids. One day I did manage to get some time so headed off to gourits river mouth. Fished bait right out the front of the carpark and landed two very nice elf again.
Back to J-bay and the weather had turned for the worse, so the fishing was a bit slower, but still managed to catch a few on a couple of occasions.
Overall I loved it and I had some really good laughs with some of the guys that would come past either for a fish, or just to see if the fish were biting...

After that I headed inland so the fishing as over for this trip.

Congrats on the nice catches. Would have been cool to see some pics of the elf.

Just a quick question. What brand of rod were you spinning with? A rod of that length that can cast a 92g lure is a beast of note.
