Catch and Release at Club Competitions

What is the best way to implement catch and release at comps, especially where weigh officials is not an option, and where members can fish on their own?

How does one avoid dishonesty and mistrust?

Are standard weight conversion charts used to determine points at the end of the day?

Where can one get these charts?

Any tips and ideas from people that have experience in hosting and participating in catch and release comps will be greatly appreciated.

The Racetech Jetski comp in Ponta is a catch and release. The anglers are given a sticker with different colored sections and a colored wrist band. The fish must be photographed on the colored sticker on the jetski with the coloured wristband in the picture. The wrist bands are given out at launch time and are changed daily. The colour sections on the sticker determine the size of the fish and points are awarded accordingly.Different species earn different points. Seems to work very well, perhaps talk to the guys at GoFish magazine they organize it every year.

Great idea Plugger!

Have never thought of having different color sections on the measuring plank, and awarding points according to the section the fish reaches.

For fish like Galjoen the sections will have to be quite small (maybe 5cm). The differences one gets in length between rock and surf species might make it a bit difficult (1m cobs vs 40cm galjoen etc), and standardizing points according to different species size ranges.

Hi Houtarm

Have you maybe looked into how the RASSPL rules work?
100% catch and release with a 3 photo rule and a score card that needs to accompany the catch signed off by another member fishing with you.

Not easy at all faking a catch as the score card with code of the day has to reflect in the photo as well.

Thanks Foose I will have a look at the Rasspl rules. In my scenario members do not always fish together, so signing off by another member won't be possible. I'm also worried some members won't be able to take clear pictures with the cellphone to indicate length. That's why I like Pluggers suggestion of a ruler with color sections, won't have to be as accurate as a normal cm ruler. But I also think in the end using cellphone pics as a way of verifying catches might be the only way to keep dishonesty to the minimum. Having a code of the day is a good idea yes.
