Want to buy 2nd rod and reel

Hi Guys/Mannekoor

I have a Pentagon medium hmg 13,6ft (rod)& Penn Fathom FTH40 (reel)it works beautifully.

My mates and I love fishing in Ariston from the surf & rocks anyway the time has come where I want to ''invest" in another fishing rod and reel, must be a spinning set up this time /(ek wil nou koffie gooi by die see).

I would like to cast 5/6oz sinker with the new set up.

Let me know what I should buy budget 3-4k. braid/mono? reel name& size? rod name & size?

I have a trip coming up in 4 weeks time. cheers ::tight:

Daiwa BG will be the better reel quality wise but if you want to save more on the budget there is nothing wrong with a Fin Nor Lethal

Finnor lethal 60 great reel for eds..lovely blank on xxx 13', s#it guides.. I got a 10' for the blank, the main guide was bent by the time I got home from buying it from the journey in the car, I bent it straight and the ceramic just shattered. The quality of the components are k@k. Junk. But I bought the rod for the blank to re-eye anyway so not too fussed but come on adrenaline, you even have an account here on Sealine..those eyes are junky junk junk.

I'd spend less on reel, ie. lethal, but get a good reel, and reeye the rod or look at rods in similar price range to xxx (+R1000-1500 guestimate) with new guides in fuji alconite stainless anti tangle layout which is R2000-3000 range total minus reel and line. For braid those eyes make a HUGE difference. If not it will cost you more in replacement braid over time and the windknots and lost lures/gear and lost fish will drive you mad over time. Once you fish with a rod with proper guide setup (for grinder) you won't go back.

If you go the BG route, first take it to a reputable service shop like old salts (or I have a local guy I use etc..) and have the reel taken apart and service properly, greased up with the blue gunk thoroughly and oiled with corrosion x where needed, then take it to the salt to fish for the first time.. There have been reports of them failing with salt exposure, if all is coated with the right stuff before it is exposed then one should not have to worry.

Did exactly as you Dr. H.H! - I thought it was cheap at the time, liked the feel, so bought the xxx 10' and immediately had the entire blank stripped and kitted out with new guides and reel seat.

Better option for rod might be the 12'xh of one of those, right guides, hmg and etc already..costs under R1500, casts 4oz with bait or 5oz max but remember with braid you can drop sinker size as you have less line air resistance to overcome and line has less resistance in the water to get washed around and dislodge sinker.. I drop an oz or two when scratching with braid, where I'd use 5oz and .5 mono, I'd use 30-50lb and a 3oz with braid..

will check out the daiwa reel. I had a penn fierce II 4000 or 5000 in mind. what do you think about the penn fierce II reel is it better than the daiwa bg?

I'd go shimmy, then lethal/BG, then penn, the fierce the better choice as its the same internally as the ones double the price basically with felt drag washers. But ja..budget..Dont skimp on reel..but lots of discussions on sealine on this..do a search..

You also have the option of getting a 12.6ft Okuma Metaloid, can easily cast a 6oz and bait for edibles and is already fitted with Fuji K-Series guides as standard and retails for R1900.

Daiwa BG has a cult following due to the amount of awesomeness for the price but I don't want to sound too bias

My oldest one has been going for 2.5 years already and still super super smooth!

BG5000 with a Metaloid 12.6 is my go to setup for edibles.
You just need to do your research on a few things and then decide on what you like

Winner advice above..between that gear you can't go wrong.., loomis and franklin/okuma metaloid, and shimmy, lethal or BG..just service and grease/oil with corrosion block reels before use..Now to find good line, thick enough, smooth enough, thin enough, strong enough hahaha..cheap enough..

one of the tackle shops in Cpt told me to go with a Big boss 500 reel, because he feels is it the same as the daiwa dg en penn fierce ???

They are not at all in the same league. Hence the price difference. That said any reel well looked after will last you a long time.

Go to a shop hold feel and spin all of them and you will see what I mean

If I may ask where do you get the rod for that price as I`m in the market for one

these prices were posted in the good old days when things in general were more affordable...

We only wish tackle was the same price as it was 2,4 or even 6 years ago.
