My first one for the year... 49cm caught on a crab with a 6/0 hook while fishing for cracker in Jongensfontein. Astonishingly a friend of mine also caught one on a crab with a 9/0 hook which was only 52cm long.
Both were safely released

Yip. Been watching. Have sent the Parksboard and TMNP photos and registration. Lets see. They killed a Cobra too. Shocking in a nature reserve.

Nice fish there bru. I fish Franskraal fairly often. Just cannot manage to catch a freakin Gallie that side. Can't moan to much though. The steenbras has been keeping me busy.

I really want to catch a big Roman. Have been catching them consistently when targeting them, but only caught one sizer so far.

Been using salted/ dried mussels combined with fresh mussel. I bind the tough salted mussel tightly to the hook, thereafter bind 2-3 fresh mussels very loosely around it.

The small fish devour the fresh mussels, but take time to eat the salted mussel, and many times something bigger will get a chance to take it.

Houtarm, I've been fortunate enough to catch my fair share of Roman, and they will take any kind of bait.  The expecially love redbait and worm (and mussel and ocie leg and chokka).  Really, they love everything.

I have had great success by upsizing my hooks to 4/0 plus and then making long fresh redbaits with plenty bindings.  The trick is to cast out to a good reef spot that is not overfished and then just wait it out.  Ignore the peckers if you can - don't strike. A nice size Roman pulls like a truck! Puts up a nice fight...

If peckers are a real nuisance, you can't go wrong with half an ocie leg on a 5/0. Keep it long and let a 5cm point hang free off the end.  Thread it through the middle and tie it tight at the top, so it does'nt slip down.

Tight lines!

Thanks for the tips Soupcan.

Must say my size Roman also came off a reef that doesn't get fished often (loooong walk).

Will try the occie leg, so far have only caught them on redbait and mussel.

I remember the report on that beauty of yours!

Sparra hoe groot is julle ase as julle 4/0 hoeke gebruik?

Ive seen a 4.5 kg galjoen caught on a large red crab and a 9/0 Kendal meant for cracker.

Awesome but definitely an exception and not the rule!

Smaller hooks = more fish but better chance of losing the bigger fish.
Larger hooks = less fish but better chance of landing the bigger ones.
Especially with soft mouthed fish like gallies.

I'm not using a 9/0 any time soon to target galjoen!

It suggests that you should not worry about a hook half the size of a 9/0 since it was do-able on a 9/0.
An addition to your list of options above would be to use a small strong hook, thus getting more fish with the smaller size and a better chance of landing the bigger ones since its exceptionally strong.
I think a 1/0 or 2/0 big gun would get you the best of both worlds.::tight:

I agree with that hook size. Smaller hooks (<1/0) tend to rip out or not hook into the fleshy mouths of the bigger gallies, irrespective of strength.

Daarby gesê, verskillende hoek brands se groottes verskil.

Hi Werner i know the guy do the mussel shuffell at Big Bay. As you walk on to tyhe beach where they surf and you see the big rock island infort of you walk left to the open strech of beach there you can try but you need to be brave and very resitant to cold water as its hard work and plent crab bites when you doing the shuffle for white mussel

Daai manne grawe amper elke laag water daar.Dit is bitter hard op die hande maar die moeite werd en dalk net so bietjie beter as mossel.

Hi Werner

Of daars vis, of dis lang ure se blank. Hoe se Gary Player: THE MORE I PRACTISE, THE LUCKIER I GET!!!

Sjoe, baie dankie vir great antwoord!

My eerste Gallie, 47cm, net regs van Davies' Pool in Onrus.

Baie dankie! Was 'n fantastiese ervaring! Ek smile nogsteeds!

Nice first fish Werner! Also took a novice mate fishing yesterday and he also got his first gallie..just under 30 cm though and he went back..The last week been good to me, some about 30cm that went back, one lekker vet 40cm that was 1.4 kg on the scale that is vlekked and going on the braai later, and a BIG fat bull last weekend, while visiting tsitsikamma, of 55cm or just over that, weighed about 3.5 kg and she/he went back to make more baby gallies ;)

I didn't get a pic as it was a mission to land on the seacliffs and get it up, it was too heavy to lift like a normal one and we had to handline him up the cliff slowly, there was no time for a photo, the camera which was way back at the bags and I had to get it back in the water ASAP.. Shame I thought maybe it was a goner after the release as it just floated midwater for a minute or two, stunned and tired, then it kicked off and shot off down and I was so stoked. Was thinking what a waste of a beautiful fish, I was in no position to get it back again either..Thankfully, I had a witness to help and we took a length and weight for later..Eish, the scales on that fish had each a ridge running centre on each scale which I have not seen before and he/she had a large poenskop, that fish was well armoured..never even seen one that size before, thought I had hooked a decent cracker till I had it up against the cliff in the wash..had me in the rocks a few times and I would not have got it out on light gear.

Lekker that even fishing the spots elsewhere, close to the city, with quite heavy fishing pressure, we are catching quite a lot of juveniles, 20-30cm range and sizers in between so it looks like both regulations and us people are conserving the fish and the fishery is improving..I've taken a mate fishing R&S for the first few times in the last few weeks and it has been game on from the gallies, I've had more luck than I ever have in spots I've always fished for them, he thinks this is normal fishing and I've been telling him that Ive never gotten stuck into the gallies like this before..LOL..good signs. Keep it up mense putting back the small ones, putting back the breeders (except sparra, he's exempt, born with a gallie in the mouth I reckon..) and keeping the ones that fit on a braaigrid, and not being greedy.

My mate was saying how he can see how one can be greedy taking from the sea, as he has just been lucky to have quite the fishing luck, from the time I took him to spin for leeries about 3 years back and the bloody 15kg yellowtails would not leave him alone, even though no-one else got a chase that day, he got smashed up 6 times and still caught a few katonkel..now I take him scratching, its gallie after gallie, sizer blacktails, blue shads, smash-ups, katonkel malheid etc....he thinks this is all normal haha Took him bait collecting and he's pulling out slange meter long bloodworms on his first pumping trip, thinks its all normal. But then, he has also seen us releasing 3/4 of the fish we've been catching, seen fish dispatched and bled properly, filleted, vacuum bagged, more fish in the last few weeks than we have been able to eat through, the freezer overflows again..So he was commenting as to how when one respects the ocean how it gives back to you..Since the day we decided to put the bull gallie back last weekend, eish the gallies won't leave us alone.. :)

I won't even go into what the old books write of the gallie stocks of old..it'll break your heart..ok, I will haha...farmers feeding the workers by going down to a random bay on the coast at their farm, pulling a treknet and pulling a few tons of gallies to salt and dry for the winters chow. Dynamite fishing didn't do them so good either..seeing as they live right in the gullies:? The pristine spots that sparra posts pic after pic of trophy fish that he and his mates caught, dynamite fishing was a "popular pastime" to quote a book at those exact same spots, up to the 50's, and look at how they fish now. Things are slowly getting better.
The culture of beach-driving also did them in, it was quite normal to drive down the beach and fill the back of the bakkie and go back to town and flog them. I was a kid in joburg in the 80's and I remember my godfather coming back with cooler boxes of gallies from the Italian club that a mate had given him, we would sit round a braai in Edenvale and chow so much kreef and gallies that you couldn't even fit a spoonful of tiramisu in later and would have to take that for home! The gallies were so plentiful at some stage it was like when you look at videos of Ascension island and see the clouds of triggers and black jacks, our gallies were like that.. Then when I read books from the 80's they talk of the gallies only being plentiful at spots that you could not drive to or get to, and in areas where they were once abundant, they were gone, except for example at one set of rocks cutoff from car, past the 4x4 road.. Now the fish are being caught at all the old spots and most are small but they grow. I had another mates son come visit end summer and I showed him how and what water to fish etc.. and he went home and went from a bass fishermen to a gallie slayer, thing is he was fishing old gallie spots near his house near CPT that used to be gallie hotspots in the old days and these days no-one fishes those spots anymore and no-one expects gallies to be there or anything..And he tried, threw a bait here and there on a good looking day and now has found a few random rocks that have give him one or two keeper size fish a trip on average and has fed the family over the winter, smack in the middle of town under everyones noses! I only told him to go look around there as the spot is meantioned in a very old book as a gallie, cracker! and geelbek! spot, right near CPT. No cracker yet but full of gallies of good sizes. Gold is where you find it!
But ja, out national fish is coming back!

Hallo Sparrabos! Baie dankie man, dit was werklik 'n great ervaring gewees! ;)

Hiehiehie, ek het gewag dat iemand my bietjie tune daaroor! Great stuff.

Daars my storie! Jis nou's ek alweer lus vir gaan visvang!

Some nice Galies coming out again - well done guys!

My own experience these past school holidays was interesting, in that I spent a great deal of time messing around with kids 'n fishing than actual fishing. I also wasted a few mornings throwing plastics and spoons for elf and kob that were clearly not around - but you never know man!  Big elf lurk in winter...

So on 1 of my 3 dedicated Galie trips I came right on a 2 nice fish - a 41cm Galie and a nice fat Yellow Belly Rock Cod from the same hole.  Nice surprise!!  The previous days scratching the water was clear and flat - almost no swell in a place near Vic Bay where the water is almost always OMO.  It was so clear that for the first time ever I could see all the structures below and now have a very good idea of where to drop into when targeting near fish species. In fact is was so calm that I caught a 42cm Roman where I was hoping for a galie.  Crazy!

The Galie and Yellow Belly were caught after I went scratching up the coast from the house for 4 hours and lost 8 sinkers - and that using circles too.  On my return I thought I would just drop into the same holes as the tide was pushing and the wind blowing into my face - light rain falling.  Good pre-frontal conditions and I'm glad I persisted.  This one particular gully had a small shoal of white baitfish and that's when things picked up.  I pulled 3 fish from that hole in 30 minutes and then called it quits - returning the smallest.

BUT - by far the most fun I had was the previous day when the water was still calm but a bit more lively and I promised my 5 & 7 year old daughters that I would take them fishing. Between them they caught 4 Dasies and 4 Streepies - and it was a blast - even for me!! And I did not touch my rod, just helped here and there...  But they (mostly) baited hooks and reeled them in.  Little Zebco's screaming as the Blacktail pulled like Parow tow trucks!!

Good times and I highly recommend teaching girls to fish.

Only 8 sinkers in 4 hours haha You should see how rof the spots round here are.. When the going gets tough, the chainlinks, sparkplugs and twine come out..I fill the holes with lead and then my mate dives them out and sells them back to me!

Nice report mate..

been making mental notes of catch reports and weather patterns.. interesting with a biig kob caught in last week at Macassar I'm told.. saw the video though of the prob 20+ - 30kg daga

I was using a Galie rig - 1 power swivel where the sinker and mainline share the same swivel eye, and the other eye with a 30cm snood for the hook. Most times the sinker breaks off and then I add another, but this time it was whole rigs lost.  And my knots are good - figure 8 to mainline - I have to straight stick and pull like hell.

I was using an Exage 110H and an older Torium 14 with 0.42 Kingfisher GA - so perfectly suited to scratching and definitely not light spinning gear.   Thankfully I have a sinker mold so it's not a cost thing, as the average cost is under R2 per 4oz from scrap lead (I have a rasta friend in a tyre shop who sells me wheel weights lead cheap cheap).

It's more the effort of having to rig up a new trace on a breakoff that's tiresome. It's a time waster...

The odd thing is I was using 2/0 and 3/0 circles with redbait - had a few pulls but nothing but lost rigs.  Switched back to 3/0 J hooks and was onto fish and didn't loose another sinker for 3 fish!

Sadly modern sparkplugs are just too light - they weight 1½oz each, so you need to cluster 2 or 3 together somehow.  And the George coastline is ROUGH - properly hostile. No-one is ever diving sinkers out there, it would be too high risk.

Haha..ja twine also helps..a 10cm piece above your sinker, sometimes I use a nylon grapnel/twine, depends on the rocks..some shale type or rocks with cracks the grapnel jams but doesn't and you can yank it out half of the time whereas a bottle will just jam vas..after loosing two grapnels though, I'll haul out the second hand bottle sinkers haha..when I run out..sparkplugs..Or even scratch around for large black mussels as sinkers as you are just getting jammed anyway so the weight does not matter except for casting, making a knoppie with an ugly tag end in your sinker line and as the mussel opens you stick it inside, it clamps shut and the knoppie keeps it on the line, the tag irritates it and it does not want to open again..Regarding the mussel or sparkplugs, you only have to cast just past your feet for the fish you are chasing haha..I have such a collection of old spark plugs form lowtide rockpool rambling that it would take me a while to chew through them..lots of sinkers in rockpools if you look at springlows..Nice to see the baby fish in the rockpools and if you can ID them you get a good idea as to what fish are on the reefs in front of you..hehe found a few good spots to catch the big mamas of the little orange tails like that.. ;)

If you can find heavy scrap iron chain for cheap, buy it..great sinker, get one that is heavy enough but still easy enough to hit with a boltcutter to make sinkers. I had some where each link was abouts an Oz, a few in the bag with a loop of twine and good to go, this was the most snagless design.

If you breaking off your whole rig then your hook snagging, make your sinker trace 10cm longer and hook trace 10-15cm shorter for those waters so the hook and bait going here and there in the surge just above the snag and structure and not amoungst in it. Better bites like that too. Visible bait where the fish are looking for it, in the surge.

That coastline is going flat over the next few days, if not now, someone will be diving sinkers guaranteed. My mate goes out for an hour when the sea right and gets 50kg minimum out his holes, only limited from what he can carry out more than how much lead is down there, when the sea nice he will do a few dives..at R14 a kg scrap value or R20-40 a kg second hand sinker value for the ones that are still usable, that is between R700 and R2000 for a hour or twos work..in todays economy, for sure those holes near George are getting dived out. I used to have a conscience for donating so much lead, now not so much since I was shown how it operates by the locals here..

Studies shown that lead in large chunks like sinkers are environmentally benign, small pellets, jigheads and split/bird shot are the problem as far as entering the foodweb or affecting the wildlife. If you weren't making your own, I'd say those sinkers you lost, you probably buy back next year all shiny and new in the same tackle store, as the guys making them get them from any source that cheap, guys diving sinkers also supply them..melt it down, scrape off the slag and its all shiny again.. My mates who dive them out are always looking for new spots..we should start a new thread .."spots to go recover my lead 2018" :)

spark plugs among modern things not what it used to be.. had a sl50 bearing with thick gooey grease that i wanted to clean out and put bearing in battery water.. soaked for a while.. that did nothing with grease still there.. even the bakkie it was in was untouched by battery water.. might as well tried normal drinking water

ja look at a trace wallet and fill with pre tied traces.. i rarely make traces at the beach even if i fish the whole day with 1 rig

which circles were you using.. hopefully not the Berkley Fusions?

Battery water? Like from inside a car battery, sulfuric acid..or "battery water" from a bottle which is distilled water, pure..which would do absolutely nothing to grease or a tub? Benzine you need for cleaning bearings, not battery water..Benzine, lighter fluid, naptha, white spirits.. :)

How do your pretied traces from rusting before use flippy?

from the store bought bottle.. but now i know as per your post its distilled water only.. normally use 1 or more of the others you mentioned for bearings was just curious that day to see what will battery water do

pretied traces are tied at home and when at the beach each one stored separately or 1 per packet so won't smell sea water unless i use it so keeps long in tackle bag with no rust.. not cheap hooks either and chemically sharpened so has not left me down just don't have the patience to make up traces at the beach as every minute might make a difference..same goes for sinkers

only thing i retie is my leader if i break off

Ah that makes sense..ja the issue is when you take one trace out with wet hands, next trip they are all vrot..Single bankies it is!

For sinkers I just do a single overhand loop most of the time..and loop em on. Pretty reliable/weak knot to break off and niks to change a sinker or take it off in the unlikely event I finish a session with a sinker still on..Traces can be stored minus sinkers then but still no knots to tie..Ja think you convinced me to pretie some traces again..but not today, I'm off scratching.. :) Lekker

Thankfully I was using Adrenalin Circles - they have served me well, are strong and inexpensive.
Regarding traces and tying rigs on the rocks - I have a whole bag for of pre-made traces for various target fish species.  Complete traces go into these little resealable plastic bags that I found in the chinese shop.  I write on each bag the hook size and target species so I know what's what on the rocks - 1 traces per bag so your salty fingers don't rust all the hooks.  I then also have a trace wallet with snelled hooks and snoods only without swivels as these are used when you are forced to breakoff and you don't loose the entire rig. Sometimes you just need a hook...

So all in all I spend minimum time tying traces and "knitting on the rocks".  When I get home I count the number of empty trace bags and then in the evening or whenever I simply retie to fill the empty bags.  The hooks never rust as they are never exposed to salty air and I also quite enjoy tying traces in preparation for the next trip. Here's a picture of the little pouches and the bigger wallet.

So more time with bait in the water means more chances of actually catching!

i wonder if that moon eclipse caused weird conditions.. was out Thursday with water flat and not fishable.. i was confused as heck as it was 1 day before full moon spring.. we also had static weather conditions for the last 5 days which is always not favorable for fishing

that eclipse or blood moon was something to admire though

Wind makes the swell, not tides..reason it has been flat is the 3 resident high pressures are trying their best to be in their summer positions already..Fronts are being bounced off from the west off to the south and not sweeping over us, the south atlantic high is forming a barrier to the approaching fronts so their energy is dissipating before they make landfall and their winds not reaching a high enough speed over the storms fetch to generate a decent swell to send on it's way to us.

Awesome blood moon though! Went flat by us too, was epic for elf on the beaches though for a while until the moon got too full, ate my fair share..Then as soon as the swell kicked again..gallies and cracker. Saw 2 locals, previously less advantaged folk, hook 2 crackers, one 5kg that they kept and another very big one that they lost! In chatting to them I was told "they are cracker manne" and the ou was not fussed about loosing the big one as he put it, they would have put that fish back anyway, since they target cracker, what is they point of fishing out an area I was told, so they put the big ones back to ensure smaller ones are always there in that area to keep catching..I was very impressed, normally it is just me explaining why I put the big ones back like a broken record.. there is hope for us yet! Seems the message is making its' way to the ground and with no help from authorities in charge either, who do fokol in the way of education to the fishing masses.

I lost my blood moon cracker too haha call it self release but I never got to see him stuck under the last ledge before he unhooked himself when I left the line slack like a pleb when we were doing the see-saw back forth as I was trying to rockhop in the fullmoon darkness with big swell and spring low..sketchy..dropped a gallie too in the afternoon at high tide and missed some bites, can't win em all.. Fished one day when was completely flat, water was warm and gin clear, bites were few and far between..got a goen kolstert dipping for mullet for livebait in a gulley after chumming the gulley nicely, no takes on livebait but found the one little piece of foamy water a few meters wide and threw in there and got a gallie bite that didn't hook and maybe something bigger till redbait was up, then on pillies and chokka a kollie and a very decent and unexpected yellowbelly that took me down and swam straight into his hole..I had to wait for him for at least 10 mins to swim out, I could feel him there, knew it was either rockcod, cracker or occy. Just had to wait it out..Fish are around, one must just find em..all fish were released, none were target species, I lost those haha. I still had enough fish in the freezer and fresh shad for a fry and sashimi. But anyway 3 fishing sessions on those flat still days and there was action each go..elf and elf the two sessions after sunset before the moon was up..good elf..mates lost 5kg numbers 2 days in a row at their feet as you loose the big ones, I got my limit of those 1-1,5 kg numbers, 3 of us did, one of us got 2. Good action till moon was up then dead still. Other days gulley scratching, when one put a bait into what little white water one could find, no matter how small, it was full of fish..:) and they were chowing, I was just short on bait with tides not playing along and no swell to spoel some stuff out for collection..just go fish, put back the breeders and babies and pick up the trash you find..trash left by fishermen..eish..I see poor folk cleaning up areas, and then some leaving so much cr@p behind..and rich folk leaving all their cr@p behind too and then some cleaning up..Some ou left a good 200m of crowsnested brand new line in a pile on the beach, just ripe to kill an otter or tangle up a sterretjie or seagull.. Seen enough missing limbs and untangled enough. So thanks to that ou for donating me some very larny and expensive, and unmistakable, doublex extreme abrasion camo line for me to sure as sinker line but rather take your cr@p home with you and burn your old line in your fireplace, don't even throw it in the trash. We'll get there eventually. Hopefully.

great stuff ((goodp_ keep em coming t(((up((_seal1_

weather not static anymore but on the drop.. ja not sure comparing fish rich areas to areas not so fish rich lol.. but rub it in hahaha just kidding :).. well it was not for nothing as i caught a first.. standing there with rod in pipe i watched how gracefully i think it was a african oystercatcher fly by and immediately thought to myself run for rod and lower line.. but no i stood watching the bird when next moment rod tip bouncing like crazy.. yip into my line.. retrieve as gently as possible with a oom walking my way.. hand my rod to him while snipping the braid.. eventually loosened the bird that flew away none the worse i guess and i started retrieving my 20lb hi vis Boss braid by hand.. lost maybe 80m max??.. will use the reel for shorter rods in future and not the heavy 10ft casting 3oz anymore.. might run out of line quickly

stood there talking to oom who intro'd him as Oom Jasper vannie Struisbaai.. not anymore though now living locally and self confessed Plaat specialist with a good few kob and steenies to boot.. wanted to know where the gallie honey holes are locally.. spoke lekker for a while then left strategizing for next time

Once you get the hang of it you can almost do it by feel..but ja you can spool on a new 300m of braid if you wish ;) flatten your braid between your fingernails, just shoot for the middle and let the needlepoint find the gap, and then through the other side..flipover and repeat.flip back and repeat..till done, turn around, thread the needle which can be the hardest part, rest is just laborious, and repeat the whole process..

But ja you lucky those cape town crackers were (largely) fished and trekked out in the old days..we can't fish for gallies with dental floss around the southern cape. What does sparra use again? 0.65 mono mainline or something!LOL ja the bycatch speel nie rond nie..There are apparently secret spots in cape town with cracker among the gallies but I'm not allowed to tell and I don't fish there so will leave those fish for the mates who do quietly fish there and release those fish..Atlantic west coast nogal, oops but then I am already giving too much info away..old days in records they would trek cracker at houtbay. But none there now :). Found my biggest pod of redbait washed up in houtbay, still got some in the freezer, the pod was the size of my leg. A meter long and almost 30cm wide at the top, the meat inside filled one and a half 2l ice cream tubs..I'm still fishing my way through it, it is a real commitment to open those layers of ziplock bags and take some out for a session..Even when I have it with in the coolerbox, it is a commitment, smells like a REAL BERGIE..caught fish with it already but wow even the next day I can smell that guy on my hands..think I'm taking it out with me next session..got me amped now for the real vrottes!

I've had moerse duckbills pick me up on vrot redbait before and steenies as well as plenty crackers so wary of the dental floss for putting some vrottes or any rock bat like black mussels or anything like that out. Maybe for shad or something..Shame I will never keep a steenie that I caught on vrottes again after the way the last one tasted..was pretty sif, he didn't taste like kreef like the one before but tasted like he had been chowing vrottes for the last month, I couldn't even eat his vlerkies which are normally my favourite..felt bad for killing that fish, he tasted so bad. haha live and learn.

I got my first nice gallie when shown a good rock by a mate, first cast, he was like throw there and I did and bang was on, on a light braid rig which was a hellavu fight, we gave up on shad spinning and he said hey lets go fish for gallies..but I've hooked as many crackers as I have gallies throwing a bait next to that same rock in the seasons since then so..I don't even think of using that rig there now haha! The hooks we use you would wonder how we hook the gallies but when they want that redbait, they are not skaam. Hooked a monster few weeks back through both scissors of the mouth, was going nowhere. What is most important for hooks is that the gap is wide enough and hook strong enough for bycatch and the hook point is as sharp as possible for the gallies. But way off topic!

Learnt most of my plaat fishing from him.

Ja lekker size Sparra!

Went out today in the wind and waves looking, have had a piece of a vrot pod of redbait that filled a 2l ice cream tub..It is so stinky it takes real commitment to pull it out the deep freezer and fish it..I've been chopping chunks off to go fish for the last year. Fished the fres stuff washed out today but no luck, then was about to go and give up, I could not feel any bites in the pumping wind..and then figured I've chummed the water with enough redbait over the afternoon, lets try one real stinky bait and wait to get pulled down or not..

First cast with the bergie special, the sinker didn't even touch the bottom.. Thought a cracker had hit me, but it was a gallie 57cm and just under 4kg. Stuck in the bottom lip and my second of that size for the season..super stoked. Eish did I get some protests from the ou's fishing either side of me when I put that fish back! Haha :) Damn I just wanted a small one for the braai. Looks small in the pic but believe me it was a goen, got someone else to measure him against my rod and make a mark so I would not cheat haha.

Both caught in quite heavily fished areas, but with extensive reefs..It amazes me that fish that old and that resident hadn't been caught and taken out already.. I put them back, genes that I'd like in the genepool. Those goens are mostly females in galjoen, it takes females 6 years to reach 40 cm and males 8 years so I wonder how old those big mamas are.. My tally for the season 2 undersize released (I think, maybe more), 2 goens and 2 released on the braai!

Another thing, I got the fish on a decent hook for cracker and co and the guys next to me got the cracker on a little 1/0 kendal in the lip..haha that's how it goes.

Ja flippy god is a comedian..life is always entertaining..Been lucky, but looks like it has been a good gallie season all round, lots of fish caught, large fish caught and lots of them sent back swimming..Stock is 10-20% still of unfished levels, imagine how good it could get it we started supplementing stocks with hatchery fish and started a culture of releasing biguns..there would be a gallie waiting to jump on the hook most times you went down to the sea. My braai grid would be so stoked..in the old books you read about fishermen watching them wash around in the waves and get washed over rocks they were so prolific, I've never seen a gallie in the waves haha! When I look at videos of places with untouched inshore fisheries like ascension island, I can fully imagine the gallies being that thick.

Been reading about the gallies, the biggest threat to stocks are a reduced biomass (which is where we are at) and cold water upwells during spawn time which kills the larvae pretty quickly enmass Which explains why false bays' fishery is so good and tsitsikammas' less pressurised fishery not so good relatively). They are reasonably slow growing but nothing like the hotties, kolstert, or poensie. They could support a much larger harvest sustainably than we harvest now if the biomass was bigger to make more eggs as they once did. In areas that have reverted back to unfished levels because of being mpa's and where upwells and terrain suit the fish, the biomass is estimated at over 1kg of gallie per meter of coastline! It has improved everywhere else but looking at the graphs in studies, we are spot on where it was predicted with the stock improving after limits and seasons introduced but stabilised at a new level around 20% of old levels with increased fishing pressure and improved technologies and knowledge. We can get around this in two generations of fish(10-15yrs) by putting the big ones and little ones back and getting government to supplement stocks like they have been doing very successfully in the states. The gallie would suit a hatchery program well.
