My eerste Gallie, 47cm, net regs van Davies' Pool in Onrus.

Baie dankie! Was 'n fantastiese ervaring! Ek smile nogsteeds!

Nice first fish Werner! Also took a novice mate fishing yesterday and he also got his first gallie..just under 30 cm though and he went back..The last week been good to me, some about 30cm that went back, one lekker vet 40cm that was 1.4 kg on the scale that is vlekked and going on the braai later, and a BIG fat bull last weekend, while visiting tsitsikamma, of 55cm or just over that, weighed about 3.5 kg and she/he went back to make more baby gallies ;)

I didn't get a pic as it was a mission to land on the seacliffs and get it up, it was too heavy to lift like a normal one and we had to handline him up the cliff slowly, there was no time for a photo, the camera which was way back at the bags and I had to get it back in the water ASAP.. Shame I thought maybe it was a goner after the release as it just floated midwater for a minute or two, stunned and tired, then it kicked off and shot off down and I was so stoked. Was thinking what a waste of a beautiful fish, I was in no position to get it back again either..Thankfully, I had a witness to help and we took a length and weight for later..Eish, the scales on that fish had each a ridge running centre on each scale which I have not seen before and he/she had a large poenskop, that fish was well armoured..never even seen one that size before, thought I had hooked a decent cracker till I had it up against the cliff in the wash..had me in the rocks a few times and I would not have got it out on light gear.

Lekker that even fishing the spots elsewhere, close to the city, with quite heavy fishing pressure, we are catching quite a lot of juveniles, 20-30cm range and sizers in between so it looks like both regulations and us people are conserving the fish and the fishery is improving..I've taken a mate fishing R&S for the first few times in the last few weeks and it has been game on from the gallies, I've had more luck than I ever have in spots I've always fished for them, he thinks this is normal fishing and I've been telling him that Ive never gotten stuck into the gallies like this before..LOL..good signs. Keep it up mense putting back the small ones, putting back the breeders (except sparra, he's exempt, born with a gallie in the mouth I reckon..) and keeping the ones that fit on a braaigrid, and not being greedy.

My mate was saying how he can see how one can be greedy taking from the sea, as he has just been lucky to have quite the fishing luck, from the time I took him to spin for leeries about 3 years back and the bloody 15kg yellowtails would not leave him alone, even though no-one else got a chase that day, he got smashed up 6 times and still caught a few katonkel..now I take him scratching, its gallie after gallie, sizer blacktails, blue shads, smash-ups, katonkel malheid etc....he thinks this is all normal haha Took him bait collecting and he's pulling out slange meter long bloodworms on his first pumping trip, thinks its all normal. But then, he has also seen us releasing 3/4 of the fish we've been catching, seen fish dispatched and bled properly, filleted, vacuum bagged, more fish in the last few weeks than we have been able to eat through, the freezer overflows again..So he was commenting as to how when one respects the ocean how it gives back to you..Since the day we decided to put the bull gallie back last weekend, eish the gallies won't leave us alone.. :)

I won't even go into what the old books write of the gallie stocks of old..it'll break your heart..ok, I will haha...farmers feeding the workers by going down to a random bay on the coast at their farm, pulling a treknet and pulling a few tons of gallies to salt and dry for the winters chow. Dynamite fishing didn't do them so good either..seeing as they live right in the gullies:? The pristine spots that sparra posts pic after pic of trophy fish that he and his mates caught, dynamite fishing was a "popular pastime" to quote a book at those exact same spots, up to the 50's, and look at how they fish now. Things are slowly getting better.
The culture of beach-driving also did them in, it was quite normal to drive down the beach and fill the back of the bakkie and go back to town and flog them. I was a kid in joburg in the 80's and I remember my godfather coming back with cooler boxes of gallies from the Italian club that a mate had given him, we would sit round a braai in Edenvale and chow so much kreef and gallies that you couldn't even fit a spoonful of tiramisu in later and would have to take that for home! The gallies were so plentiful at some stage it was like when you look at videos of Ascension island and see the clouds of triggers and black jacks, our gallies were like that.. Then when I read books from the 80's they talk of the gallies only being plentiful at spots that you could not drive to or get to, and in areas where they were once abundant, they were gone, except for example at one set of rocks cutoff from car, past the 4x4 road.. Now the fish are being caught at all the old spots and most are small but they grow. I had another mates son come visit end summer and I showed him how and what water to fish etc.. and he went home and went from a bass fishermen to a gallie slayer, thing is he was fishing old gallie spots near his house near CPT that used to be gallie hotspots in the old days and these days no-one fishes those spots anymore and no-one expects gallies to be there or anything..And he tried, threw a bait here and there on a good looking day and now has found a few random rocks that have give him one or two keeper size fish a trip on average and has fed the family over the winter, smack in the middle of town under everyones noses! I only told him to go look around there as the spot is meantioned in a very old book as a gallie, cracker! and geelbek! spot, right near CPT. No cracker yet but full of gallies of good sizes. Gold is where you find it!
But ja, out national fish is coming back!

Good day gents. Has any of you fished Kleinmond before? I went for a drive not long ago and the water looked great for a Galjoen or two. I live in Caledon and would like to try there in the near future. Ek het vrottes en mossel. Kan prawns pomp by Palmiet. Hoe is die gallie Hengel daai kant?
