Torium 30 spool speed

Hi all.

Recently acquired a good condition Torium 30.

Need some guidance on:
a) spool spinning slower than TLD20/40. Is this due to the spool being "heavier" than TLD?

b) found the cast control knob a bit "loose" compared to TLD20/40S.

c) new to spooling Torium 30. What do you suggest?

Thx

spool like you will with any other multiplier.Cast it and see how much shorter your cast is than what distance you get out of other reels.if far out open up and clean it give a good grease/oil and try again.Hope it helps

check the spool bearings, they could be in need of a service, incorrect oil, overly packed with grease, rust or dirt

Took the T30 for a cast... got nearly half the distance compared to the TLD20/40S.

Bearing? Previous owner used the reel a few times, was packed away afterwards. Bearing replacement?

Maybe the reel need a service? Any recommendations of a good place to service T30 in the Mossel Bay / George area?

Thanks

Soak the bearings in lighter fluid (as in Zippo lighter) or Naptha for about 30 minutes, spin them on the end of the spool axle until they are dry (fluid will fly off), then repeat.
Dry bearings are noisy so don't assume they are done for when they make a bit of a noise as you spin them dry.
If the bearings are shot they will sound crunchy
Let dry thoroughly and apply a single drop of light oil and you wont be able to stop the spool..

Take the reel in to Johan at Extreme Fishing in George. You won't be disappointed.

might need a extra brass shimmy added in spool cap if still loose..will unscrew itself falling off so best have it seen to asap

i added a extra bearing ( see photo ) for better spool stability

other options is having reel magged

cheaper option ( not magging related ) will be to polish spool ends with silvo/diamond guard etc for longer free spool if u want that.. might help with a longer cast or take to someone that polishes spools like many have done with this reel

pardon my domgeid here.

But Flippy, what will the reason for the polish of the spool shaft do?

why are we using bearings?
to prevent the outer casing from damage "bearing fits in snugly into its slot", so basically bearings should not spin.

ok, so inner race of bearing, should fit snugly on spool shaft, again to prevent damage to spool shaft.

ok, so we have bearings, it all depends on quality of bearings.
ceramic bearings tolerance are much smaller.
thus a wobble will not occur to smaller tolerances.

ok, lubrication:
grease, is good, but has more drag.
it will protect much longer but spool speed will be the down fall when using grease.

light oil....rocket fuel...something like that.
viscosity is very low, thus friction is very low, thus spool speed and free spin is increased.

down fall, when the spool starts spinning at that speed, most of the lubricant will move away from the turning, spinning components.
thus prolonged periods of fishing without constant lubrication could cause damage.

adding another bearing will assist in drag, but will assist in preventing/ avoiding wobble of the spool if unbalanced.

this is just my uneducated opinion.
but what works for me, might not be working for you.

also remember the torium spool is heavier then the grandwave spool, just for comparison.
this is why the grand waves are such lekker reels to cast.

Geen domgeid...
Polishing the spindle end and the INSIDE of the pinion (it is possible) has merit with fixed spindle design reels like the Torium
Granted it is over the top (I like that) but it makes a small % differenece
The spindle spins inside the pinion and it's a source of friction.
Polish the internal and external surfaces and you should see a difference - I did this with Enigma's 43 year old Ambasadeur 6000C that i mono-magged for fun.
on a small reel like that the difference was dramatic.
On a big heavy spool like on the Tor 30 i doubt it makes a big difference, but it all adds up..

Hi Willem,

Happy news years to you / Tacke holic and all.. agree 100% with Brandon firstly no domgeid( someone that knows everything won't ever learn something ) so i also ask questions also which is why i also said take to someone that polishes the spool ends.. locally Keith Murrison and Old Salt are masters at it if OP don't wanna do it himself or local tackle shop in his area don't do it as its done with a machine so professionally done

this does help in aiding casting distance with a heavy spool reel like a Torium.. OP also compared spin speed to a tld.. doing it yourself you can go over board resulting in too much metal removed from spool shaft resulting a wobbling of spool so tolerances must be tight but also free to make it cast friendly.. easy said than done but with someone that knows what they doing it should be bread and butter job.

spool speed / bearings spinning fast as i mentioned a few years ago in post options are thick oil or castrol magnetic oil.. other option oil bearings often.

hope that answers your question?

ok, nou verstaan ek wat julle eintlik bedoel om wat waar te polish.

sodra ek die torium nader trek sal ek hom gou strip en n pic of twee plaas sodat die ander manne kan verstaan wie se shaft word waar geshine!!!

Thanks for all the feedback this far sealiners :).

Bit off topic, between the 'old' vs new Torium HGA model, how do they compare (spec, durability, service, etc.)?

HG is a new model of the same reel

Which is better 2000 3 series BMW or 2017 BMW

HG Bigger gears, bigger drags, Faster bearings

Smaller body earier to hold and spins way FASTER

Torium 30, old model, no spares available (except generic stuff like bearings)

HG all spares available

Thanks Enigma for the info.

When checking on forum posts, most T30 discussions more on "older" model, not alot on newer T30.
