Mussel cracker bait

Never caught on limpit, but according to Schoeman in "his book, "Strike" the yellow variety of limpit (yellow flesh) is excellent bait. I got reefed and broken off by a big one yesterday, so decided to do some research on what they eat. And limpit is apparently high on its feeding list.

Near Gouritz - Kanon. The crackers seem to be quite abundant there. Unfortunately I had been too lazy to put a very thick shock leader on and paid the price.Okkie head bait

Yes it was kind of hasty and negligent of me. I'm so used to surf fishing that I didn't think of changing my end rigs and was frankly just lazy as it was just a "quick hour off the reef".I'm going to spend the odd trip targeting them from now as I do believe I'm hooked. I have already set up a shorter and stouter rod and reel with .55mm mono. Plan to use a 5M shock leader of .7mm and hook snood of 0.8 mm or maybe 1mm. Plan to throw some lines around Gansbaai/Franskraal for starters.

Any corrective advice is always welcome. I read some of your previous posts Marthin - Got to love the bit about taking an extra pair of underwear!

If you've ever tried eating them raw. The yellow ones are quite edible, like any other shellfish. But the black ones are yucky. They have some bitter astringent compound in them that doesn't go down very well. I guess the fish know this too;)
