Plastic corn

I never believed they could work, but after more than a couple of catches on different sessions, I can confidently say, they do work.
I do soak them in flavors that normally gets me the fish. This weekend garlic soaked fake plastic corn did the trick. I do see they do take more time before a bite than floaties, but I want to continue using them as the fish tend to be not the smallest in the water.

I just want to hear from guys who are experts on the matter. Are a single fake corn better when placed directly on the hook, or will it work better on a hair? I ask this as not all the fish that took the bait was landed. Normally with floaties, for me, the bite to landed ratio is close to 100%.

In which way, directly on the hook, or on a hair, will the fish be less spooked? IE in which way will the hook be less visible to the fish?

Hi Barbelman,

I'm no expert, I caught many carp on fake maize, at first I though it was just luck but, they do really go for it, I normally will hair rig a single pip (neutral buoyancy) on +/- 4 inch hook link attached to a method feeder and feed some real meliepips over the spot, usually as the carp sucks on the method feeder it will inhale the hair rigged pip first time , it has saved me many times from blanking.
I feel hair rig is the best way with this, it offers the bait more natural movement and lets the hook set properly with little chance of the hook pulling, as it is made from plastic it is not as malleable as a real pip it hinders the performance of the hook doing its work my opinion.

Thanks Jonathan.
I forgot to add, I use the buoyant ones. So if they are on a hair, they will be effectively a pop-up.
To me that ''might'' mean less bites perhaps?

Thank you. I also want to hear from local guys as well, how we are doing it here in our country.
Plastic corn is more a "specimen" bait so will be fish mostly like the above links...even in RS of A.

That is true. The guys who camped next to me also made it clear to me, but I maintained it worked, as I was the only one who caught anything that day:)

I must just add, I put it on the hook in a way that as much of possible of the hook is exposed, since the plastic corn is tougher than real corn I can hook it using a very small piece of the corn.

I only use plastic corn , and have some days out fished my fishing partner using real corn. I have caught Carp , Kurper and even the odd barbel , I rig mine on a hair rg.

Great news. Do you use them plain or flavored?
Any chance of posting your most successful rig with these? ::slr::

Thanks Fishpaste. I will post a photo after work with the fish still hooked. I have not taken a nice enough photo of the actual rig, just of the hooked fish.

I can add, this is the big fake corn, seems you get only two sizes, standard and bigger. It was flavored with Garlic. Wonderful bait. I call this rig my combo specimen/conventional rig. Hooklink is 12lb fluorocarbon.

Just a small thing even on the floro still use a snell or knot less knot like you use on a hair rig.
The angle really helps with hook sets.

Thanks timjan. I have tried the knotless knot but the angle seemed too extreme to me with fluorocarbon, hence the normal old style knot. But, I can give it a try, why not.

As you know. I like to soak my fake corn. But what if I want to never remove the corn from my rig. Will the metal hook in the dip cause any issues since it might be submurged for two weeks or more at a time? Will the hook not rust or something or even contaminate my dips?

Your hook will rust mate.
