4x4 Automatics on the beach?

Hi all,

I am looking at replacing my bakkie in the next few months and am wanting to find out from those that have experience with driving auto's on the beach pulling boats.

I have owned 4x4s for the last few years and have never had problems but don't want to buy an auto and then have a problem.

The reason for an auto is that I spend a lot of time on the road in traffic.

Any comments?

In my limited experience, i've found that an auto 4x4 makes you look like an expert on the sand. easy peasy :)

Yup, and remember, you can lock the maximum gear that it will shift to as well.

So if, you want to tow up to 2nd gear, you can just lock it to 2nd gear, it will still pull away in 1st, but won't shift past 2nd - a win-win in sand.

All of the above replies are spot on however tyre pressures and floatation determines how it is easy to drive successfully on or get stuck in sand.
