Spinning for natal snoek

Hey guys I need some light shed on the retrieve for snoek and is it true they only will strike in the first 20m or so of a retrieve?

i believe that it is a very quick retrieve.
but it is not cast in stone.

the thing is that snoek feeds just behind the waves, in and out the last one before breaking.
this means you need to get your spoon out there.

when your spoon hits the water it creates a splash and a sound. this is normally investigated and obviously a strike there and then.

You can not retrieve a spoon too fast for a snoek, I have also had many hit me just behind the shore break and even one or two in the shore break

When saying that you cant retrieve a spoon too fast, I mean there is no such thing as too fast, crank it

All those snoek were taken on a kingfisher needle nose spoon

nice fish there.

yip, on a straight spoon "not like s-bend/ toby"
you need to speed up the retrieve, s-bend etc a slower retrieve is better.

but casting distance is better on a straight spoon and much less then a s-bend type.

they flutter during the cast and then all distance is lost.

They love to patrol where a rip goes through the surf just on the backline. Find these and you will find snoek. Before first light to about 45 min after first lite is the best time.

Off the boat we also look for the outgoing rips and troll as close we can.

Yip they make a good meal. Similar to Couta.

Cut into cutlets or fillets. Sprinkle course salt totally covering flesh. After ten minutes wash all salt off. Drain water off flesh. When dryish spread some garlic butter lemon mix over the fillets or cutlets, grill for about 15 to 20mins deepening on thickness of flesh. While this is all happening grate some chedda cheese, take out fish sprinkle cheese over fish, pop back into oven until cheese has melted over fish......... Awsome meal. this works for most fish.

On some casts allow the spoon to sink (flutter) to the bottom. They sometimes take the spoon on the drop, or immediately after you start a fast retrieve lifting the spoon from the bottom.

I'm taking notes here. I've noticed that in most of the pictures taken with Snoek the water is clean and waves are small .? Still looking for my first one.
