Hi Kabous.

Dont know the area well. but do fish the orange for cats from time to time, there is fore sure big cats in the water, make sure your tackle is up to scratch to get them out, as my last outing to the orange in dec i landed a few small one and a couple 8kg-12kg, there was multiple fight that my 40lbs braid was just not good enought, end I went home with my tail between my legs.

Goodluck, and please do post some pics of your trip.

was in the rigtersveld and pella, its a looong way from blouputs, but one can expect the same fish.

we camp next to the river, and almost always its difficult to find a open spot, reeds is normally the problem and this is where the fish broke off, we spend one night in augrabies, but the river was very very low, dont know if all this rain may have changed the conditions.

most of my takes came of using smaller catfsh heads, every night had a fight on each rod with a small cat on.

80pound braid for the water gras (cuts better than mono)
1mm leader and carps whole 1.5kg and muddies live and whole. 7 feet to 9 feet boad rod with decent reel (saltiga saltist ect)
Do not go undergunned will get a lesson from those fish. At night go for water 1.5 to 3m deep.
In the day fish for bait and forget the barberl. Good luck.

This is a 1.5kg karp cut into bait. This is Vaal rivier and Bloemhof bait. But good in orange rivier for smaller fish. 10 to 15 kg.
Good luck.

I thought the same initially but the more I thought about it the more I like it...
Easier to cast...
Less knots...
Running lead setup...
Weight tugs in against cat when fighting it...
One can maybe just add a tight fitting rubber bead a few inches above the hook to have a little separation however my brain tells me that one should have no difficulties in hooking up as is.
Lets here what sluk has to say about it.

Cool thx guys!

Somebody maybe have a photo of a decent rig you can use when catching with big baits like a 4kg carp? 2 Hooks circle hooks??

I find it vary difficult catching with such big baits!i once lost a huge cat on n 7 kg carp head because i did not hook it correctly.

I like my leader to be 600mm long with power swivel on top two beads on either side of the weight and a figure 8 knot to the hook. It gives the fish half a meter of pull before some resistance is felt and by that time the fish is normally hooked. I do not use this rig with circle hooks where my sliding weight is on the main line.
I do not fish with circle hooks as I found to mis hookups.
I have yet to try a another rig with more self hookups.
Just my 2cents.
