Hi Willem

Eish man! This venue always remains awsome, even if the fish are a bit scarce. Good report thus far and hoping there is a PB to mention later as you proceed with your report.

Just one question relating to the digging / removal of sand.Do you think the Estuary is full enough to ensure a good flow of water enabling enough scowering effect of the sand?

I really hope the project works well enough to ensure a recovery of the system. It must be a huge operation.

Cheers

we did discuss the height of the lake compared to the umfolozi river and ocean.

it seems like the lake is actually below both.
thus water should actually always flow into the lake system and from there only flow out to the sea.

the current satellite images of the drought and the current full lake system seems to confirm this statement that the lake is indeed below both systems.

yes it is indeed a massive operation, moving all the sand.
the reason for the moving of the sand, is not to obstruct the umfolozi river flowing into the lake system.

thus the umfolozi will flow directly towards the lake and only from there will it drain to the ocean.

we do need much rain in the area.
Uncle Piet "safety officer" informed me that the umfolozi is also flowing into the lake at honeymoon bend.
he says its a rumbling sound as all the water is coming in.

so that it good.

my biggest concern / problem is the north east wind. it is also the prevailing wind.
this means that the massive water in the lake system will be basically pushed south wards.

thus most of the water will eventually drain out to sea.
will this be enough to keep the mouth open, I don't know, we might sea a breach eventually out to sea, but at the same time we need constant water to fill the lake system.
droughts don't help in this regard.

what I do know is that: when the mouth is open and the breeding of fish and organisms start again, then the whole cycle will start all over and all the fish will return.

well, what is left of them in any case.

I had the opportunity to start my fishing career with the mouth open, fishing was good and easy.
with the mouth closed, fishing became much more difficult but this assisted me in becoming a better angler.

if all returns as it once was, then we might get to see guys hauling in fish.
by that time other restrictions would most likely be imposed in the area.

Also keep a eye out for the next cyclone approaching, Enawo is its name.

tight lines. story to continue

right, with this trip we had 2x consecutives days fishing the northern beaches of cape vidal.

again fishing these areas are normally done on the turn of the low tide. on high tide one cannot get to the lip to fight the fish cleanly, so your chances of landing a fish of size is basically zero.

my first luck in this area was on 13 October 2006. that was when I got my first proper GT. it weighed 28kg.

I was really lucky to land it back then.

we also worked the area with plugs on sticks.
but we had no takers.

the first day we had a pull on the wave Garrick fillet but we were burnt off on the scattered rocks in the area.

edit......
ok so with the tide coming in strongly we had a pull on the wave Garrick fillet.
the fight was well.......mmmm no fight, the fish just basically swam to shore where it was landed.

I was very surprized about what we had just caught..... a green job fish, our first ever from the beach.
we decided to keep it as it is supposedly very nice eating.
that night we had a small piece each and it tasted very nice.

with the pull we had it was decided to make a return effort the following day.

Here JJ with his 1st ever green jobbie

looking north towards leven point.

here one can see scattered rocks. a haven for small fish to hide on high tide and a hunting haven for the bigger geets to come get some food.

we missed out on other fishing aspects but I don't like brown water.
we had a look earlier in the afternoon at the water colour at the main beach and it was much better with most of the brown water back at maphelane side where it belongs.

it was decided that as low tide was quite late that we had a window to fish high tide and early morning at the main beach.

which we did.
I still had some chokka left.
the following morning was spring high tide at 04:11

the 3x big rods were set out.
all rods were casted.
2x rods had chokka baits, with flotation and night lights in the baits.
1x rod had a fish bait.

just before first light we had the first pull.
it was really nice, seeing the fish raise to the surface and one could see the glow stick in the mouth of the fish.

the fish was quickly landed on over gunned tackle. is was a fair pan sized salmon.

the bait was still good and the rod was casted again

first light came and just then we had 2x rods with pulls. it was suspected to be shad but the fish bait was gone with no scratches on the nylon line.
the other rod was also inspected and the chokka bait was still good.

the only suspicion was that we missed another 2x snottie salmons.

all 3 rods were again in and as I was cleaning the snottie the other rod went away with a nice pull just to be bitten off. clearly a shark.

with the sun coming out I noticed that the brown water was also back as the previous days north Easter died down during the night.

again we had some grass on the lines.
the tide was also going out strong.

at 07:00 we hit the road back to Villa mia.
the salmon was chucked into the fridge, a quick coffee was taken and we set off to cape vidal for the 2nd morning session.

I suppose the Hippos still do the street thing. Quite often when I stayed at Saxmere one could see them from your room window, grazing the grass. They are huge.

I think the most likely best time to open the mouth would be approximately 6 hours before the incoming tide on a spring tide. A strange thought however is that many years of sediment settlement must have a drastic effect on the average depth of the system, which I stand to be corrected is at 1 meter. I wonder if there would be enough water left for the Crocs, Hippos and other marine life??? Its going to be interesting to see what happens. The Sharks are gonna be feeding wild on all the fresh water species that are going to be pushed into the sea. I also wonder if the crocs and hippos will know how react with a sudden current system back in place or will there be many ending up in the sea?? Well time will tell and I think mother nature will kick in rapidly and if all goes well the system will recover fairly rapidly.

Thanks for the report Willem, interesting!!!!!

only a pleasure.

guess we will have to wait and see.
I don't think we could expect it to be much deeper then 1 meter.
we all know that rivers flow the slowest close to the ocean thus gradient should be very small.

Pics of kobbie added.

We left Heidelberg at 21:30 with the wife's Jetta.
We were 3 in total, Jaun my son and Pieter his cousin.

It was Pieters first rock and surf “more surf angling” trip of his life.
He has seen all my pictures and he was really amped to get to the water and try his hand at some serious salt water fishing.

We did do a boat trip in April at Durban where Pieter managed to fight some good fish and sharks from the boat.
Pieter also succeeded in landing his first black tip shark of about 20-25 kg at Durban ski boat club from the surf on my popping rod using mackerel as bait.

We had a nice drive down and arrived at St Lucia at 03:15 in the morning.
There was no time for sleep, so the rods came out and all tackle was sorted.
By 04:30 we were on the beech, the moon was still up and we could see the water clearly.
We had some mackerel and used that.
after sunrise we tried targeting shad with spoons, but they weren’t feeding on spoons.
the whole fishing trip, we were unsuccessful in catching any shad on spoons.

the first day we managed our quota of shad, all were good sizes ......but never too big to slide.

the morning session ended in 1x hammer head of about 10-15kg, the lucky angler was Pieter.
a black tip shark of about 25kg was lost in the shore break after i took hold of the nylon trace and it parted.
this time, Jaun was on the rod.

the two cousins decided between them who would take the next pull.

we called it a morning session and proceeded to stuff our tummies full of fresh shad.
We took a lekker nap as we had to be ready for the afternoon session.

the afternoon session was interesting with having 4x pulls on the rods.
all were sharks which managed to snip our 1,1mm traces with smiles.
we called it a session at 20:00
