Right..., Here it goes .., My very own "Premature" Birthday GIFT : From DAD..., To DAD with Lots of Screaming reels and Tight lines FUN...!!!

Berg River yesterday ( 23 Feb..) were absolutely Garrick infested...!! And like a real Plague.., really destroyed most live, Harders that dared to cross their paths...!!

And I.., were just at the right place .., and the right time...( makes for .., in my book 80 % of successful Fishing..)

First : Got "SMOKED " and had a proper reel run ..( Although .., this one might have been also a Big Elf..)

Sorry to ALL... ,NOT sure how to compose and post the whole story into one ..

Continued...

then following some choice words and not such choice threats to the berg itself...
I re-positioned my Hook to the center of the Livvie.., and very wisely stuck to the Circle....

got my First Garrick .., A most gorgiaas and very welcome , first one in 2 years.., GARRICK.

Nice fish Sparri!
Take note that your line must go through the otherside of the circle hook. ;)

AND...The Berg had more to offer...
In the next few hours.., I got Elevated to ecstasy and Wishful Landings No Less than 4 times...!! One even let me see his full Number plate before throwing the Circle...!!

AND .., Just when I thought to do my Last cast of the throw net to get some "very skittish Harders in the shallows....!!

The 'BULL' struck..!!!

always willing to learn more and attempting to increase my Landing figures..!
Please explain.., reason for line on Different side...?
Does it perhaps cause the hook to turn and cause a pos hook set..??

Great stuff Sparri(ni(ce(fish)(
Can you put a drawing of how and where you placed the hook (in the centre of the livie)? I had a short discussion with friends who lost fish because of the circle hook being placed in the upper lip of the livie. Interesting!!!

Damn that's a buss Garrick!!!
Exactly as you say - Helps the hook to turn and angle the point into the scissors!
See the below link in particular the 4th post showing a close up of the line going through the eye:

Many thanks .., makes 1 Hundred % sense..1
will def try this set up ...
Also .., I have NOW NOTICED that the Circle hook runs I had .., made me CONCENTRATE on NOT striking when the run happens..,and when Fishing for Garrick's previously .. So much confusion reigned on when to actually pick up your rod .., when to let the fish run .., and when to strike...??
Now with the circles I fished yesterday .., I just gave the fish time to set the hook by itself...!

I suppose one can also apply this kind of set-up when fishing Kob..??

Mnyamane ;

Sorry man .., don't have a current pic of my bait set-up I used... ,but will try and explain ;

I just set the circle hook on the topside .., behind the main top fin/ dorsal fin of the harder/ mullet. take care to not penetrate the skin TOO deeply.., you will hurt the spine of the fish .., and then it will not be able to swim properly.

There is an interesting article in the april/may 2016 RSD issue of different methods how to hook up a livie...

Hopes this make sense..?
Regds.

Congrats on the fantastic catches Sparri. Have you tried surface poppers for them yet? The take should be awesome.

@ Sparri - Great fish and memorable day fishing. Congrats!

@Doc - as a seasoned Garrick fisherman I wonder if you could throw some light on this: I'm curious to know if one could also pick up Garrick in the surf on the West coast. Surely if the river is so full, then it stands to reason that they also move in the surf zone? And then would these also migrate?

The same question applies to, for example Hermanus - where I am based.I have yet to catch one in the surf on live bait, in spite of trying quite hard - and yet the lagoon is full of the smaller ones.

Further up the coast from Agulhas Eastwards, Garden route etc, they are caught quite regularly in the surf and I have been successful there. Same goes for elf - hardly ever, if ever, catch them in the sea yet the lagoon is full of them (hermanus). Trying to understand this anomaly!
