Carry Cat issues

Just a friendly heads up, make sure you do your research properly.

How long should your boat last? What is your expectation?

Well, here are some scary images. This carrycat is about three years old. Yes, only three years old.

Transom has gone soft and need replacing. Hull has delaminated. Looks like a complete write off only after 3 years.

Would you trust your life and your crews lives with this type of quality?

Scary stuff indeed!

Luckily my 1995 Ski Vee 500 was built by Dave Olufsen himself and it is as sound as the day it left his yard! Bone dry inside every time.

Only other boat I will look if I upgrade is a Yeld cat. Not only are they great rides and safe they are built to the highest standards.

Where the gelcoat is breaking away from the fiberglass, thats from bubbles in the mat when they laminate onto the gelcoat in the mould.
It happens on corners because its difficult to laminate sharp radii.
Its up to the finishers to go and tap all over the hull to look for hollows.
Bad workmanship, in all fairness a carry cat is one of the cheaper options on the market.

@veritas... what's your agenda here? Are you a Carrycat owner or a competitor. You don't seem to have joined the forum for a fishing discussion.

Some more information will help everybody.
Is this your boat?
Did you buy it new? Have you spoken to the manufacturer?

Some of the damage looks like it might have been the trailer?

Im a little saddened by social media and how one could hurt another mans business buy posting this thread without full facts.


There is a number of manufacturers in South Africa who have had issues with a build.

The vessel mentioned was sold to another client.
1. Hit a sun fish.
2 hit the trailer which caused serious damage...
3. previous engine bolt holes where not sealed.....

Come on.

I think Justin hit the nail on the head - Its quite ridiculous the drama this has created. Im sorry to say but some people have used this as a tool to fuel their existing vendettas with Carrycat and its just plainly not cool. It came at the expense of our brand and we are not overly happy about it. We have a brand to maintain, mouths to feed and we don't want the whole world exposed to what every charter company goes through and this is maintenance, and wear and tear issues. Next time a Butt cat has the slightest issue, we will come take pictures and tell the world how kak it is. ( We would NEVER do this but ya, thats just who we are as people - and we do love butt catts anyway!!). As charter operators, driven with integrity, we try stay out of peoples business and concentrate on what is important to us. ( family, our business and being good people )

Before I continue, there are no conspiracy theories, no cover ups, no PLEDGES OF ALLEGIANCE to the Carry Cat brand. We say what we say based on what we experience. We report what we report based on fact, not some overly fabricated dungeons and dragons saga. CarryCat has been extremely supportive and extremely helpful whilst we have been going through these issues. Dawie has offered to spend 2 weeks rebuilding our boat to a point where we are satisfied as CarryCat owners and satisfied that it is indeed safe to take clients out on charters. They have offered to repair the hull, offered to replace the transom and offered to redesign the trailer so that the contact points are removed and replaced with wooden guides on either side. This will solve the contact issues we have been experiencing. All of this free of charge. This is what we expect and this is what we have received. End of story.

I think this type of offer should be celebrated and any CarryCat owner reading this will be comfortable knowing that if there are any faults discovered on their boats, at least Dawie picks up his phone and speaks about it and offers to sort it out. ( im not saying each experience will be like ours but ya, extremely impressed with his response and willingness to work WITH US to sort the matter out). Yes we are invested, yes we have no other choice but as Carrycat owners, we are happy that there is a willingness to help. This is what is important and we look forward to receive our boat back so we can get back on the water!

Arguments can indeed be made that too many holes were drilled in the transom ( Carrycat dont fit engines btw ) and that the trailer was indeed badly constructed creating a perpendicular contact point at the end of the tunnel when retrieving the boat, thus causing damage. Steel hitting any boat at 70 degrees or more will make a hole. End of story. Yes the transom did actually endure a massive hit after 3 months of ownership and it did sustain damage. Yes, it was a sunfish. We are more peeved with the previous owner for not disclosing this to us.

Im not defending Carrycat here but any business, when starting off, will make a few mistakes. Some have argued the thickness of the gel coating etc etc. Dragging a name through the mud and publically humiliating people is not the way to sort things out but unfortunately this is how modern society works. In my religion, publicly naming and shaming people is considered more of a sin than murder. But anyway! Im not religious, just saying. If I take my car in to have a service and they discover an oil leak, people dont go taking pictures of the engine and expose Toyota engines as a defective product. Its OUR business and no-one elses. If indeed it is FACT that latent issues are discovered, we will report these to you. The fact is that Carrycat has built over 100 boats. Not one has suffered a transom failure, not one has suffered a major malfunction causing loss of life or injuries and to date, EVERYONE is happy!

This witch hunt must stop.
