Hwzt all I am not much of a lure fisherman, or have n ot really experimented much at all but i want to give it a bash in the durban harbour and from what i see the top water lures for grunter work quite well. Any suggestions on what top water lures would be good to use and best way trace it up. Do i just tie the line direct? what knot is best? can i just the same knots that i use for my throw bait trace? kind regards Cheese

The Zombie killer in pearl white is a good choice. Its a top water slider. The trick is to pull and twitch it really slowly - like a prawn/cracker shrimp which is drifting in the surface film and trying to make headway. To be successful you will need to fish close to mudflats (i.e. where the prawns live) and you will usually do best on a falling tide.

Be careful about wading on the flats - there are plenty sharks in the harbour and people have been attacked in the past. Zambezi sharks (bull sharks) have been known to attack in very shallow water; however they do not generally swim around on the flats but instead wait in the channels - so a bit like crocs. With that in mind generally OK once the water is shallower than about calf depth and provided you stay away from the drop off.

If you have no previous lure angling experience, grunter is not the easiest target in my personal opinion. You'd be better off targeting predators like kingies, garrick, shad and so on until you get the hang of the basics.

I've been trying to get a grunter on surface for a while ... which has left me doubting my technique. It sixes and sevens about whether a slow constant retreive or pausing and letting the lure sit for a few seconds is the best way to go? Anyway, I have to agree with the previous comment that you might be better off targeting elf on spoons to start off with.

Gareth88, definitely go with twitch and pause. I've caught lots of grunter on lures and a decent number on topwater lures. Some days they're very aggressive and some days they're more cautious, but as a rule twitch and pause works well. Walk the dog for a meter or two, let the lure sit, twitch, pause, twitch, pause...repeat.

yeah I have had some close encounters with throw baits so I tend to be very cautious. im normally on the banks until the water is low.

Thanks for the advice bud i think i will see what i can get there im hoping for mix instead of just grunter but will let you guys know how it turns out on Monday.

Haven't caught any grunter on topwater, but have picked up that other good options for lures are the Rapala X-rap walk and Rapala Skitter-V. Always nice to have some different options available

I have a few lures that look just like prawns, they may be just what you need. Believe it or not I have used them behind the boat trolling for Natal Snoek and they work. Yes Snoek eat prawns! The crystal shrimp is an excellent lure for grunter and lots of other species too. I have caught grunter, steenies, permit and a whole lot of reef and flats species on these lures. They're not topwater lures, but they are very effective. I mainly use them for sight casting on the flats, it's a light lure, so they don't cast very far. As for topwater lures, most wtd type lures work fine for grunts, just don't go too big. As is often the case, the color and pattern of the lure is far less important than the action when targeting grunter on topwater.

I can also suggest using some split shot about 500mm ahead of the lure(weight it in some clean water so it just pulls the lure down), bring this in slowly with a stop start action. This causes the lure to operate close to and on the sand. Works very well for most species in estuaries(bar tail flathead, grunter, river bream, rock salmon, even pick handle barracuda etc.) Not Top water lure angling, but is another way to target fish and it works.
