Hi.Can anyone tell me of some bass fishing locations in the swartland area. I was thinking to go to Misverstanddam area. Will I be able to find bass down river of the dam wall? Any good locations higher up the dam/river?
Any other hot spots I can visit?
Appreciate the help.

Hey bud. I see you are from Paarl. Right in front of your doorstep is the Berg River. Small mouth Bass and Carp paradise in the 80s

From my past experiences fishing this river between Daljosafat heading in the direction of Malmsbery I experienced some of the Best Fishing. Rapalas, 5cm Black back and Gold belly and any other Rapala with similar colors of a juvenile Bass are deadly. You don't have to fish any artificial longer than 5cm. If you can PS remove the trebbles and replace with singles. Less damage to the fish.

I would not be able to inform you of the present state of the river and the fish. Speak to the farmers in the area as the river is a boundary to a few farms.

Let us know what happened. You have until the first winter rains to fish.

I used to farm on that stretch between wellington and paarl, years back and the fishing was excellent.. Have not idea now but you need to get access to most banks from a farm. There were plenty largies, resident bigboys, and babies, as well as the occasional smallie in the rapids and lots of spotted bass all over against the side where there is tree and rock structure, like right up against the side I mean. Back then I used to cane them on a yellow hula popper but now i'd take other stuff too like flukes. There is also large resident trout somewhere too but I'm sworn to secrecy on that one and the where's and how, sorry ;)
Was also great carp fishing with hard fighting river run fish, great condition with all that poo in the water.
Was also bass and trout in the dams on paarl berg but that was difficult fishing, not many and wise fish and clear waters. Bass in breede too. Used to take my rod with and go a day early to music festivals on the banks and have a right good time on my ace.

My late uncle had a farm very close to the river. I fished that stretch, Feb to April, everyday, sunrise to round 9am, then off to work and smashed the Smallies and Carp.weekends it was literally morning to night. Was also told about the Trout, tried but never saw or caught one. Other fish present were Sunfish( Blue gill. Yeah those river fish are physically more energetic than stillwater fish. I am sure not much has changed. Every single rapid, weedy, channel and shady spots held fish. Awesome awesome fishing. My little Scarborough worked overtime. One thing I did notice was that of you fished the same stretch for more than 2/3 days in succession , the catches diminished due to the fish becoming use to the artificials.

If I had to go there tomorrow I would not look at any spot!

Ja the trout, you would not find them if you looked, you have to be shown them. And they only come on the bite in a specific weather condition and when there is fry in the water and you have to know where. But they are there, large and plentiful when it's on. Very large..hehe My mates found them by chance long ago and keep it zipped. But I fished there for a long time and never sniffed a trout so don't waste your time looking haha. Though for the record they have naturalized and established long ago in that system, I guess if it wasn't for the dam/s on the river lower down we would one day find a few salmon on the west coast and wonder where they came from?

Ja that river had good bass fishing. Second that. There was a little spottie behind every rock and under every overhang when you figure them out..

Thanks guys. I will try section between where the Lang Street and Oosbosch Street grosses the Berg river and maybe further north. What is safety like in this area? I heard that it is better to go with 1 or 2 of your mates when fishing the berg river in Paarl.

I emailed some farms adjacent the berg river. Either they don't reply or I am not allowed. Any other specific spot which is good for bass fishing, safe (if it just me) or maybe you know of a farmer that is is a bit more lenient?

Many thanks
B

Long time since I fished there so the security situation you will have to check out.. For access to farms, best to pitch up at a reasonable time of the day to their gates with a bag or two of biltong to say thanks and ask for access?

Heading for the Cape next week, arriving Monday, leaving Friday. Any Bass oppertunity's near Parrow. Don't wanna travel too far. Push comes to shove, I might just head for Paarl. The so called Paarl dam, next to the Main Rd. The dam was known as Oom DUP se Dam in the 80's. If anyone has watched the DVD 4 of Loutjie Loutjies where he fished the dam. I smashed the carp in that dam. Big Bass in the dam as well, but hell of a difficult to catch. The Berg river is literally next door.
