Ok, and how is the blank does it only bend in the top section/half of the rod. I have never owned a hmg rod before.

You get all different kinds of HMG. HMG is a generic term used for higher grades of Carbon Fibre. For example there are Slow action fly rods that bend all the way to the handle but are very light and very responsive when casting Then you get an HMG Shark rod which is like a POLE The action of the rod is determined by the manner in which the carbon is wrapped on the Mandril The Archipelago has a C bend and is ideal for both braid and Mono casting. The Caspian ha more of a J Bend and is Stiffer lower on the rod and weighs a ton in comparrison

And C curve does not mean it is soft or does not cast well

Interisting, so you can have a Hmg rod of 50 tonne rated 5oz that bends more than a 24 tonne Graphite rated 5oz

The question was is it a very stiff rod, which by implication would pre-clude it from use with braid The higher the modulus the lighter and more brittle the carbon. So a 46t slow pitch jigging rid is soft enough to impart lure action yet making it strong enough to haul a big fish. Purely if a rod is made softer than another would detract completely from its ability to cast a heavier weight. So making the 50T blank softer than the 4oz Glass blank would not allow it to cast a 5oz, technically one would possibly get that but you would get 0 distance as the rod would not have speed of recovery to launch the weight. You could however get a similar action, both for 4oz but with the Carbon significantly lighter and not much improvement in casting Yet then use the same amount of carbon and layer it in suc a manner that the rod absorbs shock but I'm creases in recovery speed then there is als a significant increase in casting performance, drop in weight but quicker in action.

Hi, why doesnt the archipelago have a gap under the reel seat where you can get rid of sand and dirt that accumilates. I think all rods should have this.

I have no idea what you are referring to. I own 176 rods from ultra light to 130# IGFA Class with AFTCO full Aluminium reel seats and not one of those reel seats have a gap above or below and none of those rods and even less my shark rods which I fish in the worst of conditions off the beach and none of them have ever needed a gap above or below. If you get sand into your reel seat, rinse under a top or in a pool before undoing the reelseat. When Getting home your rods should then be rinsed with freshwater (the Whole Rod) Open the reel seat screw cap rinse out and then close the reelseat all the way and rinse the newly exposed threads Do not apply any oil to the cleaned reel seat, it's a magnet for dust and sand Apply anti-corrosion or tackle protection spray to the guides and wipe the blank down with a cloth with the same anti-corrosion liquid on it

When you pour water from the top it flushes sand out easier. It works when you screw the reel seat all the way to the bottom and pour water in the top of the reel seat and screw it back up. Attachment: 20200706_074316.jpg (Downloaded 193 times)

I think you're over complicating things a bit. Just go and the feel the rod in the tackle shop together with your reel. You will know immediately if the rod is for you or not. And you have to literally dig your rod into the sand to have problems with sand accumulating inside the reel seat. Running it under a tap will sort out any sand accumulation anyways, regardless of the reel seat design.

Ok, just thought that piece below the reel seat was for that purpose of cleaning out sand.

I also have the 11ft Sensation Caspian rated 1-4oz, maybe Craig can confirm, I think it is the same rod as the Okuma Caspian (same blank and guides)? Something I observed when fishing for Shad/Elf with bait when the wind is up using the Caspian I missed alot of hook ups (using the same reel and braid, same terminal tackle) I used the Loomis in same conditions and never missed a fish. So the Archipelago has excellent hook setting ability. You cannot go wrong with the Loomis. ![]() Last edited on Thu Jul 9th, 2020 07:38 pm by Sting Ray |
