Nou weet ek hoekom ek nooit kablejou gevang kry nie.
Ek dog hulle bedoel "see" baber en kablejou loop saam.

Pragtige vleis.

I remember from my childhood that baber is a lekker fish so last year December I decided to spare the kurpers and opted to relive my childhood memory by sacrificing a baber instead... I remember boneless white meat but instead it was a redish meat. We had no fancy ingredients with us except for salt and pepper, cake flour and some sunflour oil...just the basic ingredients for making a lekker kurper fillet in the pad for a brunch next to the water!

I must admit that the cat wasn't as nice as I remember but I think it just needed a batter instead of a flour coating and n deeper fry...

I will defo try it again but this time cater for the occasion!

This is an instant classic thread..:)
:_seal1_

I've eaten barbel, made into nuggets, battered and deep fried..You'd swear it was chicken with a little fish after taste. Kind of what snake tastes like, a large puff adder that I ate tasted pretty close. Not that I normally eat those but that one lunged for a mate and got the chop and became dinner and a belt. It was damn good eating, just like I remember deep fried baber! Just thinking also, those "sea run" sharptooth catfish should be better chow than their muddy brothers, I wonder what their main diet is in the estuary?

What a lag, check for the red eye sales going up inland... :) I've caught baber spinning for bass, bass spinning for leeries..Caught kurper and carp while waiting for a live bait to get taken by leeries, and had double up with an angry leervis and a rather large carp in a Cape Town lagoon, at the same time which was pretty interesting as they were in different canals and I was standing on the thin piece of land between them. The carp was the one that knitted me all up in the structure but I got both out. For a kid that grew up in jo'ies I thought I had landed in fishing nirvana, little did I know! Ja the upper reaches of estauries can be interesting, you never know what you are going to catch..

Both you guys are full up on mana but you deserve some more..great stuff

Dr. I think you absolutely right...it needs to be in a batter and deep-fried!
Also, I usually do not eat freshwater fish but I will do the odd kurper as it is one of the best fish there is...no wonder Woolworths is selling it these days...
I will also only do so from a selected few dams that have crystal clear water away from any pollutants (Sorry I cannot name them as I would be giving away my spots;-)) Also smaller cats are a lot better than their larger relatives...A cat of around 3kg is excellent size! It is actually unbelievable how much meat comes out of such a small specimen.

in elk geval onthou ek as kind toe my pa en oupa daai jare harders op gourits in bo rivier gevang het.....daar was altyd jong steenbras en grunter en leervis en kabeljou in net....ons het hulle so gou moontlik losgemaak en vrygelaat......die teiken was harders....springers......baie keer het reuse karpe tot op 10 kg in net beland tussen seevis....kyk water is brak.....minder sout bo in rivier......ou mense daai karpe kaalboude genoem vir een of ander rede....weet tot vandag nie hoekom nie......;)

Sparrabos jy kan darm maar lekker stories vertel man! Ek is ook altyd so nostalgies oor die gekuier saam my mense en vriende ek dink ek doen dit net te min man! Wie gee nou eintlik om of die visse byt of nie...will mos net lekker kuiers saam goeie vriende en n klomp snert praat en lekker lag ;)
Hierdie Desember het ek weer n paar dae van lekker kuier saam my pa...my broer...my swaer...en n baie goeie skoolvriend van my!
