Hey

Im not realy a barble fanatic but I like to put out a barble line with my carp lines... im not quite sure how deep I am supposed to cast, iv heard that the barbles usually come to the shallows in search for food, is this true or should I cast my line to deeper waters?

Hi Kingfisher-guy

You heard quite correctly that they enter the shallows,as the water warms up during the late morning the smaller "baitfish", be they kurper or Ghielemientjies, will prefer the warmer, shallower water that has been baked by the sun.The barbel will naturally follow them and can then be targeted from the side in these locations.

They may then be targeted with succes on fly,and loodkop,by wading into the water a bit ,so I take it for granted that you will get them on bait in the same locations .Bear in mind that these baitfish will prefer "grassy"areas for cover-purposes and adjust your tackle to compensate for possible snags by upgrading your tackle accordingly.

Hope it helps,I am sure if you perservere a bit with barbel you will grow to enjoy them for the sportfish that they indeed are.

Cheers

Thanx kitefisher, you also mentioned that they can be targeted with a fly, that quite interesting and i'l definitly try it next time. Do you recommend a larger fly or just the same that you use for yellowfish in a river?

At about 10pm or sometimes later i've seen them come into shallows by the schools, feeding on baitfish, both in the river and in the dam at bloemhof.

Sê hom Marthin,sê hom.....

Kingfisher-guy,

to get back to your question,...if you are referring to the larger flies used for large-mouth yellows, then yes, they will work. You do however get flies like the "half-chicken" etc that are more barbel specific, but as Marthin rightly said ,if in feeding mode they will not discriminate between flies and tie patterns, hookstrength probably plays a bigger role.
