Loskop Dam

Good afternoon Gents,

I have been fishing Loskop from the bank a few times with moderate success, but due to some rather exciting developments. I am able to expand my range a bit on our next session.

I am fortunate enough to have a wife who bought me, or rather us a boat. So now I am able to get to all the places I could never before and only dreamed about.

But with this new found freedom I will be entering a whole new world of challenges.

So here is my question, I want to know everything about Loskop, where to target what and when and how.

As my favourite fish to target are the ones with fins, information regarding bait, lure, presentation, depth and location for all the species Loskop has to offer will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the only fishing ill be doing is on sealine as I am working the weekend.

I recently moved to the area and it will be the dam I have the easiest access to.

what sort of boat did you get? If its a bass-style boat with an electric trolling motor on the front then you have the option of getting shallow to fish with lures. If not, best stick to bait

Hi Aqua,

Nope not a bass boat but it lies very shallow in the water, 50 - 75cm I can do, no trolling motor yet so that might be a factor to consider.

thanks for the clips, cant wait to get onto the water.

Hi Wess, you should come to the dam this weekend even if it is for a little while. There will be boat and engine manufacturers exhibiting and and they dispense free advice and suggestions to boatowners. The boatanglers will also give you advice regarding spots to fish and what setups and bait to use and there is so much on offer that you can steal with your eyes.

IS definitely on my list of modifications to make to the boat.

Phish, will you be fishing the weekend?

Hi Wes,

Yes i fished this weekend. Winning carp was 4.65kg caught from the side. The winner set up two feeding spots about twenty metres apart using about 500 kg of feed and about 250 to 300 metres out. The depth where he fished was about 8 to 10 metres. He fished between these two markers. He was apparently using cherry blaze boilies. He won a boat valued at R100 000,00 and a voucher of R37 000,00 for a motor of his choice for the boat. Not surprising that the woman who caught the second heaviest barber was fishing right next to the guy that won the boat and she fished the same markers. She won a cash prize of R10 000,00.

Heaviest barber was just over twelve kilos and the winner won a rubber duck valued about R35 000,00. Details of the catch unknown.

The bigger carp were all caught from the side. The boats didn't do well in terms of sizes but a woman fishing off a boat caught the heaviest bag with a staggering 75 kg of fish. She apparently fished waters in the region of 16 metres deep. She won a trailer valued at R20 000,00. Boating conditions were not ideal with boats battling to stay on anchor and kept drifting away from their spots.

My advice to you would be to set up a feeding spot some days in advance and keep topping up the feeding spot at regular intervals. Make sure you have a good anchor so that you are not blown off your marker when the wind picks up. Fish that spot and you will be rewarded.

Oh and Loskop is a sweet dam ... cherry, honey, custard, caramel, brown sugar and you will be on the money. Tight lines. Let us know how it goes.

I saw the boat that was won, not bad for a R350 investment.

I managed to put my boat on the water for the first time yesterday so was able to explore a bit more than just the shoreline. Now its just to find the fish so to speak.

Heard a lot about Crocodile Bay and that the fishing is good there.

If you ask about the big blues and bass then the people become shy and don't like sharing.

Seems like big barber can be found almost anywhere. Would like to get one over 10kg.

Carp seems to be everywhere but the bigger ones are hard to find.

I am off next week and want to spend at least four days on the water. The in laws borrowed the boat and managed to loose the anchor so until I get a new one I am stuck being tied off to trees.

I think there are bigger things lurking in the waters of Loskop that might be believed.

I went for a throw on Friday night and we managed to get a few carp, the usual sizes up to about 2kg.

However I had a nice run just after 22:00 and it felt like a normal size fish. I fish with night hawks as I love the one on one and having to play the fish every step of the way. I brought it in nicely and the net was awaiting the arrival of the latest catch. What I can only guess at around 30m out the fish turned around and went on a massive run.

so much so that the pressure I applied to the spool to control the fish started burning my fingers. It just kept going for around 50-70 meters.

Unfortunately when it finally stopped I could feel the snags that it must have gone for and a few seconds later all I had was my banged up line. had to remove around 10 meters of line that was damaged in the process.

There were definite headshakes that makes me think it might not be a catfish.

any thoughts on what this illusive creature might be as everyone believes the biggest carp you get is around 7kg?

A friend of mines brother in law had the same thing happen to him last week where he had two runs but could never get the fish to turn.

Hi Wess, exciting stuff there. Could your fish have been taken by a croc whilst it was thirty metres out? that will explain a lot of things. The sudden unexplained run when you thought the fish was ready for netting; the line rubbing on the crocs back would also resemble damage by structure in the water.

I'll support that. First time out at Loskop was with a friend on his speedboat. I took a rod with some worms just in case. I think the area we stopped at is left of the launching site, there was a huge cliff infront of us. Dropped my line and after about 5 min got a jerk. Damn, then this thing started taking line !! Eventually had it at 50/50...couldn't get it to come up, and it didn't go down anymore. We took a video, I was sitting at the front of his boat, and whatever was on the line pulled us from side to side. (This was a 17t boat with 200HP motor fitted)So long story short, the line broke. Went back the next day and "caught" the same thing. Haven't been back to Loskop in a couple of years after my friend died. Recently bought a boat so i'll be at Loskop sometime this year. Taking my Thick boat rods and a huge Penn reel. i need to see what is down there.
