Hi all,

I have recently been to Roodeplaat for a couple of barbel fishing sessions. While fishing one of the bays just past the dam wall, from the launch, we were getting a number of big takes. However, regardless of the line used they were simply breaking off. Yes, we were hooking into some decent sized cats i am certain of that, but the number of line breaks was insane. we used up to 50 lb line, sometimes with a small metal trace and yet still breaks.

Are any of the Roodeplaat regulars familiar with this phenomenon? Are there perhaps submerged fence wires running through some of the bays? I am completely perplexed.

I don't know the dam at all but it could be a number of things...
Where is your line braking off - Knot or mainline?
What knots are you using and are they tied correctly?
What brand of line is it?
Do you use a leader - what thickness?
Are there visible snags above?
Are you snagging up when you reel in your line?

You know there's crocs in the dam, right? Not big ones mind you, but big enough (under 1m) to do what you describe there. One was netted (skepnet) earlier this year, at the western shore nature conservation area.
