There was a cat that used to live in germiston lake, I saw it as a lightie more than once and with witnesses. It was just over halfway as long as a K2 sprint kayak, which is 6.5m long so that makes the cat just over 3m. We got a good measure the one sighting as it swan right under us.. That was one of the first places to stock grasscarp and the barbel used to get fat on the young stockies.

Someone's gotta catch a 40kg'er sometime.. :)

Official SA record stands at 42.1kg and 1.95m long

But there have been a number of bigger ones caught as well

I don't think one is going to land one of those giants unless you're prepared for it..Self-releasers. Haha I can imagine hooking an old grandpa on a carp rig, ag shame.. We used to catch em for selling (we were young) at the local township and hooked a monster once that broke the gaff pole with its trashing and got away, but that one was half the size of the big pappa we would see occasionally near the golf course.

Wow!

My vote for a 40kg+ would be tha Orange river, but not so many people fish it as it is far.

Big catfish in various dams-Vaal, Van der Kloof, Baberspan, Bloemhof etc. however for me the best big catfish waters are from Bothaville down the Vaal river(Christiana and Douglas being hotspots I have fished) to the Orange. The further down you go the better it get's.

The Orange river being in a class of it's own.

Kurper = is a generic name for fish in South Africa. It may refer to:

Blue Kurper (Oreochromis mossambicus) or (Oreochromis aureus)
Cape Kurper (Sandelia capensis)
Rocky Kurper (Sandelia bainsii)
Vlei Kurper (Tilapia sparrmanii)
Redbreast Kurper (Tilapia rendalli)
Canary Kurper (Chetia flaviventris)

(dankie wikipedia vir die inligting)
