As I have closed 1 door, another door has opened!

What I'm saying is that I'm done with the whole pap gooi fishing style and now I'm into fly fishing!

1 of the biggest reason was that I stay in a little flat and having a case for dips and baits, a case for hooks, sinkers, lines, and the occasional mielie bomb mix etc, was taking up too much space.

Please welcome me to this new journey and also give me a hug because I know that i'm going to be spending too much money now! ((wideeye))

Just a quick question! I've been reading that a 5/6wt rod and reel is a best all rounder. Would this also be ok for the occassional small carp \ barber or do i need to go for a 7wt?

A 6 weight will do for carp.

Wait till you get tired of buying flys..Talk about storing boxes of crap you don't want to get rid of. I'm still hapily lugging around the tying gear my dad used to lug around.

If I gaze into my crystal ball, I foresee you taking up papgooing again sometime, getting into bass and lure, starting with some R&S and eventually moving out of your flat and maybe eventually down to the coast..haha this fishing addiction is a slippery slope but it can be very rewarding. I also used to live in a flat north of the Vaal. But I ran out of space for my fishing gear 20 years ago.. ;) So I moved. Now I see more wildlife than people.

I still have my 5/6wt that I got as an all rounder more than 20 years ago so I would not be a bad purchase. Enjoy it, your fishing horizons are about to expaaaand.

i would say a good all rounder for the vaal would be a 7wt. those river carp really stuff u up hard. I have a 5 wt and a 9wt and the 5 is a peashooter when it comes to river carp. still water its perfectly fine

@mrcricket - yeah, i get you! If you love fishing, you love all of it! Still sad I sold my equipment but it was nescassary.

@aquadementia - when you say "vaal", i reckon you meaning the river right?

Only reason I'm interested in fly fishing now because here at Jasmyn (by Meerhof - Harties), they were giving away tons of "the complete fly fisherman" magazines for free and been reading them all.

I see that you get different amount of pieces (2 piece, 3 piece, etc) - is it better if there are more pieces or is it purely only for space? Sorry if i sound like a n00b here

Rod was/is an "elbe graphite"..tackled a few barbel and got smashed up by grass carp..Then got stuck into bass spinning. Trout..Yellowfish..eish it all went downhill from there.. Still going downhill full steam after a few sabbaticals.

You don't have to break the bank but tackle I'm sure has changed from when I was flyfishing regularly..The ou's will help you..

if you get into fly fishing then the vaal is the main venue. 2 species of yellowfish, grass carp, barbel, and carp all potentially exceeding 20lb's (except sm yellow)

I have some vaal videos on my youtube channel you can check out. I am by no means a fly fundi but I manage to have fun

took me 15 minutes to land a 3kg cat on a 5/6wt rod and reel with 9lb leader. Its fun, but wasting so much time on a 3kg fish is not nice. The 5/6 works nicely on the yellows and even when they go down the rapids... can't wait for end sept... end of last season i came down to catching a yellow every 20min, it was my first season. Ive seen guys getting them on the same stretch every 5 to 10min.

I also live in a small place and space is also an issue... I have fishing gear in every nook and cranny but there is no way I will get rid of any! I have specimen gear, papgooi gear, fly gear, spinning gear, saltwater gear, barbel gear...you name it! Even my inflatable stands in the dining room along with my golf clubs... I would sell my Mrs before getting rid of any and she knows it ;)

Thanks @Dr halibut hoffman - yeah, i'm also just looking for 2nd hand gear.

Aaaai @aquadementia - thanks and I have subbed to your youtube - now i just want to go swipe my credit card like crazy but i will resist.

@Unlimited - yeah, i would prefer to target yellows in the river and trout in stocked dams (also just to practice as well). Then there is that corner in Meerhof (right at the end with the dead tree) that i will be gooi'ing my fly in :)

@Fishpaste - LOL!! My wife is Italian, so she is a fiesty one and won't tolerate that, haha!

There is no one-size-fits-all fly rod for the Vaal. Get a 5wt for SM yellows, and save up for an 8 or 9 weight for carp. The latter can double as an LM yellow rod as well.

@Slovo - mmmm, i wonder... maybe a 7wt then?
I might be in Canada in the near future, and the 7wt will be right for Salmon and their Trout - I've checked a dude (on youtube) catch a King Salmon on a 7wt.

Next question - which brand?

Xplorer seems to be the choice here but I'm wondering if there is anything else out there with the same quality and more or less the same price.

I think I'll be buying 2nd hand.

i have the entry level explorer 904 pro cast combo, just with a better reel fitted.

http://www.xplorerflyfishing.co.za/product/procast-ii-4pc-outfit/

the cork eventually came loose but easily fixed with glue. Still going strong
