Lately I tried a different approach. I use a maggot ring on a hair rig, and load it with about 8 earth worms. Unfortunately you can still catch some small ones with this, but it works like a charm. I use a size 4 Continental Mugga hook.

My only question about this is what would you guys suggest is the ideal hair length for this setup? I currently use a hair length of 10mm.

Barbel have huge mouths so long hair rigs work fine.

I only use circle hooks and hair rig traces. Only difference is I use much bigger baits. Just to give you an idea:

I have not gone for Barbel in quite a while, just been targeting Carp. Yesterday I used the head of a small carp. I did not use a hair-rig, but just a single hook through the mouth exiting at the top of the head. I got pulls the whole day, but could not once land them...
Perhaps my hook was too small.

So in two weeks I am going to give it another go. But this time I want to use a hair-rig and see if I can actually land them! So if I am using just a medium sized head, and not a full sized fish like IWyk does lol, will I be fine using a size 2 hook with a 20 mm long hair-rig?
Secondly, is it best to thread the hair-rig through the eyes?
Lastly, when the head is used up, hopefully, what part of the body of the fish is best to use? What size and where must the thread go through to use as a hair rig?

Just want to add a question.
I am going to catch in a narrow river.
With this hair-rig method, how far should I let the monsters swim before I strike? Or must i only strike after the second, or third take?
I mean, if the fish only swims away with the bait, won't the hook still be outside its mouth?

I've never fished for cats using a hair rig , however in all my rigs I only use circle hooks. There's no need to strike. Just tighten up as its taking line and the circle hook will set nicely in the corner of the mouth.

I always give time for the cat to take the bait proper...strike on a steady longish run...

Now last question, if I do not use a hair-rig. What sized circle hook is best when using a carp head and when using it through the mouth through the top of the head.

Thanks::slr::
Do you guys know how far a bait is sucked in when a barbel picks it up the first time? Deep enough for the hook on a hair to catch hold?

Howdy guys!! Dirk a mate of mine started with this hair rigging of carp heads some time back at kraaipoort. We had some good success. Just make sure the sircle hook is close to the mouth of the fish. Also never kap with a sircle just tighten your line once the you are sure the cat has the full bait in its mouth. Remember a cat is like a dog, it will run and eat its food in safe spot if it's too big. Dirk did some good articles in stywe lyne a while back on the hair rig

Thanks, do you perhaps now in which edition? I would like to to and get it.
Or is there perhaps a link to the article on the web?

Hi guys

I used circles for the first time this weekend at Tago and it worked like a bomb and I'm seriously never using anything else from now on.

I did however struggle my ass off to get the circle out and in one case cut of the hook to get the fish back in the water. I used the Mustad circles in the green packets. The hood were lodged in the corner in the bone each time.
