Ever wonder how those tigers are grown?
Here's how they do it

Yes perfectly edible, very crunchy (this is apparently why carp love em). Pop em straight in the mouth after you've washed em.
In Spain a drink called Horchata de Chufa can be had - you soak the nuts for 12 hours with a cinnamon stick, then remove cinnamon, strain the ensuing mixture, add sugar to taste, and drink.

Nice one DocPhil, that's very well done. Back when I lived in CT I often toyed with the idea of growing tigers, but never got round to it. Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Hi. Nice post but I would advise you to delete it as

IT IS ILLEGAL to grow import viable Tigernuts into South Africa

For this reason the importers of Tigernuts have to produce Phyto-sanitary and Veterinary certificates to Customs to have their shipments allowed into the country. Some try bypassing the process to avoid the duties and payment of Import permits and the Phyto-Sanitary certification process.

Should you leave this post here and the Department of Agriculture or an honest importer who pays all the fees and dues to import for carp fishermen then you could be having an awkward discussion for breaking the law and importing regulated and controlled substances into RSA.

Yes I am well aware of all the regulations and statutes on importing the Chufa as I on occasion do import them for clients.

Interesting, being a weed in this country it seems to be widely distributed along with a "nut sedge", Cyperus rotundus, is this of any use like the tigernut?

Interestingly a source of ergotism in cattle in this country.

It looks like a sedge I've seen around my whole life, one could just take a tuber from a wild plant and grow it in containers, this would be no different than growing a bamboo that takes over which is for sale in every nursery ;)

But don't grow from import nuts because that is illegal as clearly stated in this thread by admin so therefore sealine no more bears any responsibility. Can the OP just edit the post to say do not use import tigernuts in SA. It is a nice effort and valuable information. The actual growing or possession of the plant is not illegal, the means of how you obtain your vegetable matter (tuber) to begin your colony can be illegal. I'm going to try find some in the wild to try eat, it will go down like a house on fire with my hunter gatherer existence. Truffles and tigernuts! Thanks to the OP still, I learned something new..

Ja, ekse! Haha next time they want them eradicated somewhere, instead of spraying roundup they can just call the local specimen club to do a bit of digging.. the stuff is apparently impossible to eradicate once it has established itself in the wild so thats a joke, and take care not to spread the stuff.

One could employ people to dig it up where it is a problem and sell it locally for bait? Would be a viable business, no?

He'll have a lot more hassle from Australian authorities growing the Tigernuts there and there they will actively police it and do something about it.

Look at their current efforts to eradicate all Carp from all dams and rivers in Australia
